Seoul Subway Line 3 (the Orange Line) of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway connects northwestern Seoul to the city center, Gangnam, and southeastern Seoul. Construction began in 1980, and most of the current line opened (Gupabal - Yangjae; Jichuk was opened in 1990) over two stages in the year of 1985, along with sister subway Line 4. In October of 1993, an extension to the south was opened (Yangjae - Suseo), giving Seoul the current Line 3.

In 1996, the Ilsan Line (Daehwa - Jichuk) was opened, and connected the city of Goyang with Seoul. Currently, Line 3 and the Ilsan Line operate as one combined line. There are 2 depots at Jichuk Station and Suseo Station.

A 3 km extension is planned to open in 2009,[1] stretching from Suseo to Garak Market (Line 8) and Ogeum (Line 5). In addition, a new station will be built between Wondang and Samsong Stations, its tentative name being "Wonheung Station."

Current length of Line 3 (Jichuk-Suseo): 35.2 km.
