Seoul American High School (SAHS) is one of the largest schools in the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Pacific Area, which includes Korea, Japan, Okinawa, and Guam. SAHS is located on Yongsan Garrison in the heart of Seoul, South Korea and provides education and activities for children of U.S. Military and Civilian families.
With a student population of over 600 as of School Year 07/08, the Seoul American Falcons are the largest DODEA school in Korea. SAHS is considered a class AA school, which classifies it as a large school in the Pacific. SAHS is a participant of the tournaments and conferences held throughout the Pacific. SAHS competes in the following categories: JROTC, journalism, Model United Nations, basketball, football, cheerleading, step team, volleyball, tennis, drama, band, choir, soccer, swimming, wrestling, and cross country. They also have other clubs such as the golf, swing, chess, reading, Spanish, German, and speech club.
[edit] History
The school was first established in 1959 with initially 150 students. For the next eight years, the school educated children of U.S. military and civilian personnel from the entire South Korean peninsula. Students coming from outside of Seoul boarded at the school, mostly from Daegu, Pusan, and Jinhae. This would cease years later as several other DoDEA schools were established across the country, the first being at Daegu in 1967.
In 1982, a new high school was constructed and by that time, the school had its main and arts building and a gym. In 1987, another building primarily for the JROTC program was opened.[1]
