[edit] Sentara History

Unofficially, Sentara dates itself back to 1888 with the founding of the 25 bed Retreat for the Sick. The hospital was moved in 1896 and its capacity expanded to 100 beds, just a short two years later, the Retreat for the Sick was renamed Norfolk Protestant Hospital. In 1904 a new facility was built and then renamed to reflect a non-sectarian mission in 1936 to Norfolk General Hospital. Officially, Sentara dates back to 1972 and the merger of two Norfolk, VA hospitals, Norfolk General Hospital and Leigh Hospital. It was through this merger that the Sentara family of hospitals was formed and would eventually become linked and integrated.

[edit] Pioneers in Healthcare

Sentara has led the way in many advances in the medical field over its long history. Sentara was the first in the region to offer many advanced procedures such as electrophysiology, angioplasty, laser surgery, stents, and several others. Sentara was also the first in the region to use the da Vinci Surgical System and launched the first eICU in the country. Striving to improve the wellness of the community, Sentara continues to participate in national and international research trials as a means to increase the medical options available to patients well into the future.

[edit] Optima Health

In 1984 Sentara began offering the region's first managed-care plan, Optima Health Plan. Currently Optima boasts a network of more than 400,000 physicians and international health coverage. Optima's Family Care program is nationally ranked among the top 25 Medicaid managed care programs by US News & World Report.

[edit] Nightingale

Sentara's air ambulance Nightingale, named for Florence Nightingale, began in late-February 1982 as one of the first air medical programs in the country serving an area within a 125 mile radius.
