Senior Tigers is the nom de plom of the 1st Battalion, The East Bengal Regiment of Bangladesh Army.
This is the oldest battalion of the East Bengal Regiment, the first of the two infantry regiments of Bangladesh Army. The unit was raised back in 1948 at Kurmitola in Dhaka by Major Gani from the pioneer companys in the then East Pakistan. Major Gani is the founder of the East Bengal Regiment, who was commissioned in 1942 in Indian Army. The first commanding officer of the Senior Tigers was a British Officer named Lieutenant Colonel V J E Patterson. The unit has taken part in 1962 Pak - India war, 1967 war, 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh, 1990 Kuwait war and lots and lots of internal and peacekeeping duties. The unit is proud recipient of the red pipein (Actually "red piping", which is probably an imitation of the Guides Cavalry and Guides Infantry of the Pakistan Army, and of the 60 Rifles and 2nd Gurkhas who won their right to wear the Red Piping, fighting together in 1857), of a decoration for their contribution in the liberation war of Bangladesh. It has also a Bir Shreshtho (The highest gallantry award of Bangladesh) and lots of other gallantry award recipients. The raising day of the unit i.e 15 February is also known as the Tigers Day in Bangladesh Army.
