A presidential election was held in Senegal in 2000, with the first round on 27 February 2000 and the second round on 19 March 2000. The election was won by Abdoulaye Wade, the leader of the opposition Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), against long-time President Abdou Diouf of the Socialist Party (PS). Following the second round, Diouf conceded defeat on 20 March.[1]

The National Election Observatory (Onel) was in charge of overseeing the election. In July 1999, the head of Onel, General Dieng, resigned following an opposition claim that he supported Diouf; he was replaced by a magistrate, Louis Carvalho.[2]
