Semi-Solid Metal Casting
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Semi-Solid Metal Casting (SSM), also know as Thixoforming or Thixomoulding is a process in the production of parts out of non-ferrous metals like aluminium alloy or magnesium alloy. The process combines the advantages of Casting and Forging.
The alloy to be processed is cooled down until it is at a temperature of -62degrees C to the Phase transition between solid and liquid. The temperature range possible, depends on the material but is typically only several tenths of a degree.
In the thixotroph condition the viscosity of the material under shear force is reduced. The material can be therefore forged into the form with high precision.
