• 1837 - Panic of 1837: New York City banks fail, and unemployment reaches record levels.
• 1857 - Indian Mutiny: In India, the Sepoys revolt against the British Army.
• 1933 - Censorship: In Germany, the Nazis stage massive public book burnings.
• 1941 - World War II: The United Kingdom's House of Commons is destroyed by the Luftwaffe in an air raid.

Removed:

• 1857 - The First War Of Indian Independence : Sepoys mutinied against the British Army.

This is a good candidate except that it is a duplicate article that needs to be merged. Once that is done it can be put back. --mav 19:32, 9 May 2004 (UTC)

• 1940 - Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain of the United Kingdom resigned and formally recommended Winston Churchill as his successor.
