- 1341 - Petrarch was crowned poet laureate at a ceremony in Rome
- 1513 - French troops and Swiss mercenaries swarmed into the Sforzas' Milan after the Battle of Novara.
- 1513 - Explorer Ponce de Leon claimed Florida for Spain.
- 1838 - Isambard Kingdom Brunel's steamship "Great Western", the first steamship designed for the Atlantic, crossing left Bristol, England, with 24 first-class passengers.
- 1899 - At Sing Sing in Ossining, New York, convicted murderer Martha Place was the first woman executed in the electric chair.
- 1913 - The first Western-style parliament in China's history opened in Peking (Beijing).
