Selwyn (New Zealand electorate)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Selwyn is a new electorate of New Zealand created for the 2008 general election. It largely replaces the Rakaia electorate, which is currently held by Brian Connell, who is retiring.

The electorate is expected to remain a safe National seat. Connell has been a "Rebel" National MP at odds with the party.

[edit] History

It was created after a review of electoral boundaries conducted in the wake of the 2006 census of population and dwellings, which showed a general northwards population movement. Even though the number of South Island electorates is fixed, the decline in the population of electorates from Rakaia south has resulted in the boundaries of electorates from Invercargill north to Rakaia shifting northwards.

The Rakaia seat has been redistributed among the new seats of Selwyn, which now includes the area of Rakaia north of the Rakaia River, and Rangitata. Selwyn also acquires the Bishopdale area from Waimakariri and the Banks Peninsula from the old Banks Peninsula electorate.
