Actor John Wayne used to live west of nearby unincorporated community Selma on a ranch that is now the Deer Creek Center for Field Research and Education. He grew fond of the area after filming Rooster Cogburn along the Rogue River.[3] Also from Selma, Oregon is Kristy Lee Cook, one of the top 12 finalists on American Idol season 7.[4]
