Sellisternium

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sellisternium was a banquet of goddesses in Greek and Roman mythology. It differed from other goddess banquets in that the divinities were all seated on chairs, as opposed to reclining on couches (as in the lectisternium). Additionally, they were placed apart from the male gods, their consorts and family. These banquets were traditionally held by women. According to Tacitus (Annales 15.44), one such sellisternium was held for Juno/Hera, while the secular games had one for Juno and Diana/Artemis. According to Macrobius, a seated banquet of the gods and goddesses alike was part of the Herakles cult.
