Selim Franklin

Selim Franklin may apply to any of the following individuals:


  • Selim Franklin, Esquire (1814-1884). Franklin emigrated from England in 1849 to San Francisco for the California Gold Rush. He is listed in the Pioneer Club of San Francisco. In 1858 he moved to Victoria, BC, with his brother Lumley Franklin and opened the first Real Estate/Auctioneer business. In 1859 Selim was elected to the Legislature of British Columbia. He returned to San Francisco in 1873 where he died in 1884. The Franklin River on Vancouver Island and Franklin Street in San Francisco are named for him. San Francisco pioneer Edward Franklin is another brother of Selim. Lewis and Maurice Franklin of Old San Diego are first cousins. Selim M. Franklin is his nephew.


  • Selim M. Franklin (Oct 19, 1859 - Nov 22, 1927) Selim Maurice Franklin was born to San Diego pioneers Maurice and Victoria Jacobs Franklin. Franklin graduated from UC Berkeley Law School in 1883 and was elected to the Arizona Territory legislature in 1884. Because of his work as legislator, he is often regarded as the father of the University of Arizona. The university's Franklin Building used to house the Law School, and the new Franklin building houses jounrnalism and Near East studies. Selim practiced law in Arizona and appeared before the US Supreme Court. Selim M. is the nephew of Selim Franklin, Esquire.


  • Col. Selim H. Franklin (1906-1993). Selim Herring Franklin graduated from law school at University of Arizona and practiced law in California. During and after World War II he served as a Colonel in the Air Force reserves. Col. Selim Franklin is the only son of Selim M. Franklin.
