[edit] Geography
The cities next to Seligenstadt are in the north Hainburg, in the east Karlstein in Bavaria, in the southeast Mainhausen, in the south Babenhausen and in the west Rodgau. Seligenstadt is one of thirteen cities in the district of Offenbach.
[edit] History
The city is one of the oldest one in Germany. The first notice was in year 815 as Obermühlheim under the patronage of Einhard. The name "Seligenstadt" (City of the Blessed) derives from the Saints Peter and Marcellinus, whose relics Einhard had translated to his basilica.
However, local lore ascribes the name to Charlemagne, whose daughter Emma eloped with her lover Einhard. Charlemagne found them at Obermühlheim and forgave them, saying "Blessed be the name of the city, where I found my daughter!", explaining the name by a folk etymology. The story has been popularised by poet Wilhelm Busch.[1]
Seligenstadt also was the birthplace of the painter Hans Memling.
[edit] Main sights
Seligenstadt has many old houses in the inner city, but its main feature is the Basilica. The Einhardhaus (named after Einhard) at the marketplace, the old city wall, the monastery next to the Basilica and the Palatium built by Frederich II are other interesting attractions. In the district Klein Welzheim is a very great castle built on water (Wasserburg). Seligenstadt also is the home of one of the most popular private Breweries in Germany, Glaabsbraü
[edit] Sister cities
Seligenstadt has three sister cities:
- Triel-sur-Seine (since 1967)
- Heel (since 1972)
- Brookfield
