[edit] Welcome!

Hello, Seidenstud, Welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope you like working here and want to continue. If you need help on how to name new articles, look at Naming Conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the Manual of Style. If you need general help, look at Help and the FAQ, and if you can't find your answer there, check the Village pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions). There's still more help at the Tutorial and the Policy Library. Also, don't forget to visit the Community Portal — and if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my New-Users' Talk Page.
Additional tips:
Here are some extra tips to help you get around Wikipedia:
  • If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username.
  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills, try the Sandbox.
  • Click on the Edit button on a page, and look at how other editors did what they did.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Always sign comments on Talk pages, never sign Articles.
  • You might want to add yourself to the New User Log
  • If your first language isn't English, try Wikipedia:Contributing to articles outside your native language
Happy editing!

[edit] A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] See

See WP:AIV for how to get a vandal blocked. =D --mboverload@ 08:25, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

If you put {{subst:test5}} on a page, it comes up with text that says a user is blocked. If you put it up without actually blocking a user (which I'm guessing you can't do yet) it makes things confusing. Just for your information. Cheers, and feel free to ask me questions on my talk page. Mak (talk) 20:43, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
Hey, if a vandal is continuing to vandalise after a test4 warning, you should go to WP:AIV and report their IP address or username, and an administrator will look into it, and possibly block them for a period. You don't necessarily have to leave another message on their talk page, since if the other warnings didn't work, yet another template warning won't do the trick either. Cheers, Mak (talk) 21:13, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh, and also, usually warning templates are substituted with code, just preface it with subst: like so: {{subst:test}}. Mak (talk) 21:15, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] satan and serpent

You reverted the Satan page, putting back in the assertion that the Tanakh uses the term "satan" to refer to the serpent in the Garden in Eden. Since the Tanakh itself doesn't use the term "satan" to refer to the serpent, that seems like a mistake. Was it intentional? If so, could you discuss your reasoning on the talk:satan page? Thanks. [edit] Artlex.com

Hi. I've been coming across some of your reversions to Artlex.com and agree there has been spamming of this site. However, it is not quite that straightforward and sometimes it has been already cited in a legitimate earlier edit. Then the "spammer" has actually made a useful edit to the link by inserting an anchor to the URL which means a user goes directly to the definition, rather than the top of the page where the definition is. However, you have reverted to the previous edit, which actually removes the anchor, but keeps the URL as in Catalogue raisonné.

On another occasion the "spammer" corrected a spelling mistake on Deesis and in your reversion you inadvertently reinstated the spelling mistake.

Some of the artlex.com links are useful such as the one in Apollo Belvedere, which showed the sculpture with and without a fig leaf. Your reversion deleted this. I have reinstated it.

The edit made to Cy Twombly was an improvement with a more appropriate description, but you reverted it to the inferior description.

I suggest that where the artlex.com link has been used by a genuine editor it is kept, and if it is then amended usefully by the "spammer", we should keep that amendment.

However, when the "spammer" has just inserted the link themselves it should be reverted.

The user contributions are here. I have been through all of these up to the current time.

I see that you are doing a good job, but I thought you would like to have these points brought to your attention.

[edit] US vs. UK punctuation

I really recommend against changes like you made at Jean-Paul Marat, where you moved periods, etc., inside quotation marks rather than outside. This is a US/UK punctuation difference. It previously followed UK/Commonwealth standards; you converted it to US standards. Wikipedia MoS generally has no preference between US and UK/Commonwealth English. Changing things from one to the other is usually pointless at best, and liable to provoke anger from the "other side" at worst. This is especially the case when the change is in this direction, because the UK/Commonwealth contributors often feel outnumbered and outgunned. - Jmabel | Talk 18:35, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nikka Costa edit

I'm sorry if I'm addressing this to the wrong person, but I just recieved a message alerting me not to add an external link to a Nikka Costa fan site. If this message originated from you, I would just like to say that the site is not my own. I added the link because I found it by searching through the sites that are already listed as external links beneath the Nikka Costa entry, and I felt that this site was superior to at least one, if not two of the links given. I apologize if my addition does not meet with the standards or regulations of Wikipedia, but I feel that the link I added was of substantial interest and deserved to be included. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.210.133.10 (talkcontribs)

[edit] Bus Terminal

I agree, it's absurdly hard to get a good angle from street level, or anything less than from within a building, for that matter. The same goes for the Port Authority bus terminal. Your photo looks really good, considering the difficulties associated with trying to capture that architecture from street level. It's sure better than the photo we had before (e.g. none). Of course, I'm not trying to stop you from taking a better photo, but that would be really hard from ground level.

As for the 175th St. station, the line infoboxes state the next station north or south on each line passing through the station. So, for 168th St, for example, the next station north would only be listed the A train, but the next station south would be listed for both the A and the C train. I know it might seem a little counterintuitive at first glance, but it allows you to follow the flow of a train line (conceivably by clicking on each station down the line.) I hope that clears things up. Thanks a lot for your great work! αChimp laudare 23:52, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Forgot to mention, nice photo at 175 St. too. αChimp laudare 23:53, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Weird. I see what you're saying. Check out 14th Street (IND Eighth Avenue Line) and look South. West Fourth Street-Washington Square (New York City Subway) is a stop on the A B C D E F V, but none of them are listed at 14th St. Let's bring this matter up at WP:NYCS. I'm sure Larry V. has an opinion on this. αChimp laudare 00:10, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for the note on image uploading and encouragement. Must fight "the Man" IE wikipedia's verification, NOR and NPOV Nazis who seem to take everything as a violation unless you've got like upteen billion references. However, they also seem to confuse Physics and Cultural anthropology, especially with regard to belief about physical processes (EDM in Space). Wikipedia doesn't care about truth of beliefs, only that they are documented. The belief about a physical process is NOT tantamount to a proof of its existence (despite anecdotal references in support). I'm only arguing for the belief or (concept) interpretation EDM i Space marked for deletion, since it's a central tenet of another belief system and has no article partaining to it. Anywho, thanks for the encouragment. Mgmirkin 19:23, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

[edit] September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.

[edit] Clan rHrN Needs your Help!

  • Some dude named Litereality keeps vandalising my page. I revert it, and there he goes putting it back in there. Is he that stubborn? Please help me, sir. Clan rHrN 11:34, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't think the addition of a meticulously-sourced, neutrally-worded and entirely truthful section to Clan's userpage constitutes "vandalism"; the true problem, in Clan's eyes, comes from the fact that it reveals some nasty truths about him that he'd rather have kept under wraps. Furthermore, he's not exactly an innocent himself; he's repeatedly removed comments that show him or his behaviour in a negative light (including but by no means limited to personal attacks) from his talk page, which I recently reinstated, on one occasion altered an article to fit his beliefs, maintains a list of enemies on his userpage, and appears to be using his userpage as a personal hosting/publishing site. Literality 12:14, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] spammer

You need to give a vandal some new warnings to block him. One from weeks ago won't do--at least with me. If you come across someone with an old "final warning", give them a fresh one and then report them if they vandalize afterwards. Best regards, Bucketsofg 04:47, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Yes, the mo justifies you in going straight to a final warning and reporting him on the next vandalism. (I'm not trying to be difficult, but if you want quick admin action on something like this, make it easy for us. When I get a report, I go to their talk page to see if they've been warned; then I go to their contributions to see if they've edited since the warning; then I go to the post-warning edit to see if it is indeed vandalism. That takes me 15 seconds if it's done right and then I can get to the next vandal on the list. Bucketsofg 04:56, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Do not contact Interactivate for now

You could get in trouble for doing this, even though it seems justified. I don't have the policies in front of me, but I know this has gotten some editors in deep trouble when the folks they report get fired. I wish I could remember what the policy was -- I wanted to get to you before you did anything.

I think something should be done along these lines, but I suggest you go first to WP:ANI and get others involved.

For what it's worth, I'm absolutely on your side -- I just don't want you to be the one that gets burned. --A. B. 18:41, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

This person has subsequently been blocked -- see User talk:63.80.97.254‎. I still think it's worth raising your question about Interactivate on WP:ANI, especially since this person is promoting a pretty dark organization, www.syndk8.com. It's not clear to me what his angle is -- he/she may be trying to either discredit Interactivate (by using that IP address) or get infatex blacklisted (by spamming it) (see Joe job). There are some people playing a complex game with spam and Wikipedia now -- see some spammer's comments (such as User:Jdevalkin these recent discussions:
Also see "Developing link-bait using Wikipedia".
I finally found that policy: Wikipedia:Privacy policy. I have seen a fairly high volume editor get permanently blocked for just threatening to reveal another editor's identity to her boss along with a complaint about her use of a company-owned computer on company time. There are provisions for doing this sort of thing -- see Wikipedia:Abuse reports. --A. B. 22:06, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

Good work keeping an eye on the BLP violations at Lastings Milledge. I will try to keep track of the article too and if necessary, block people who repeatedly add unsourced controversial information. Rhobite 22:14, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

There was nothing libelous that was put on there. Everything included had been cited. Maybe you are confused about the definition of libel? —Preceding unsigned comment added by BPS12345 (talkcontribs)

Perhaps there is confusion regarding the definition of "cited" (the edit in question) -Seidenstud 05:44, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Faust

Yeah hi. You're off the mark with [1] but I can see it could appear this way. The statement is pretty much verbatim from the Oxford edition's introduction. Unfortunetely the guy does not cite which scholars except to suggest it is mostly critics from the beginning of the 20th c. In any case I think it's reasonable just to cite the introduction in this edition. Can you provide me a link to a guide to making citations on Wikipedia - conventions templates etc. Thanks, Leonig Mig 17:39, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the link to the citation template - I will sort that bit out. Here's the thing about Faust though- the whole story is epic and fantastical and when you get to the end it just goes plain weird. The ending it noteworthy in that it goes completely against the original legend. I think a lot of people stuggle to understand or make themselves feel comfortable with the ending of part II - it's almost immoral! The way the Oxford edition conveys this is by saying that historically commentators have found it "glib". I think I can come up with a better way of conveying this (cited if necessary) but I do think it is important to include in an encyclopedia article on this subject. Thanks again. Just wondering why you removed link to Luke Kelly version of the Joe Hill song you cite WP:EL which says ;

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:X-cops-you have the right to remain silent.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:X-cops-you have the right to remain silent.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 04:50, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vote for a post-meetup restaurant

I'm charged with making the reservations for us, so let's make it official. We'll do this via voting and everyone including anonymous voters, sockpuppets, and canvassed supporters is enfranchised. Voting irregularities and election fraud are encouraged as that would be really amusing in this instance. Please vote for whichever restaurant you would like to eat at given the information provided above and your own personal prejudices at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC#Let's make it official. The prevailing restaurant will be called first for the reservation. If a reservation cannot be obtained at the winning restaurant, the runner-up restaurant will be called thus making this entire process pointless. Voting ends 24 hours after this timestamp (because I said so). ScienceApologist (talk) 17:19, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Rafael Correa article correction

Hi!

I want o know why my correction to designate the FARC as a terrorist group instead of a leftist rebels was reversed? Is any wikipedia policy?

From the FARC page in wikipedia:

"The FARC is considered a terrorist group by the Colombian government, the United States[1], Canada[2] and the European Union.[3][4] Cuba and Venezuela instead refer to the leftist rebels as “insurgents”.[citation needed] "

Why did you reversed the terrorist designation if only 2 countries avoid calling them terrorists?, and theres even lack of citation on this 2 countries doing this

This is my first correction, want to know why it was not taken into account.

Thanks in advance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Daraper (talkcontribs) 00:41, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Thong

Sure. If you look a bit deeper into the page history, you'd see that this section was removed with a summary that stated it can be reinstated when it's better referenced. Which is not reason enough to remove an entire section without discussion unless there's objectionable or highly dubious material in it. In this case neither seems valid. It's just plain unsourced, and tagged as such. Aditya(talkcontribs) 09:19, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
