--- I changed the line from better-known to known because there are secret societies that people don't know about. If they are listed in the article then they are known. Acidskater: This is Wikipedia, not a Borgesian encyclopedia of the unknowable. WP:NOT#DIR and WP:IINFO apply here, I think. Also, please note that this is a list article; if there are further (verifiable, sourced) details available about any of the secret societies on this list, then it may be worthwhile adding them to the society's individual article page or starting a new article page. [edit] Rose Celebration

I reverted the addition of "Rose Celebration" because, as far as I know, it miserably fails WP:Note. I don't plan to use the Cavalier Daily as an exclusive source, but if your secret society has so little an effect on UVA that not even the student newspaper writes about it, it's definitely not notable. For the benefit of those who keep adding "Rose Celebration": without a citation or at a minimum a brief post here as to why it's notable enough, it will get removed per the guidelines above. Societies added to this page must be citable (meaning they have had enough impact on the outside world to generate some level of mention in a semireliable source) and notable, which for these purposes boils down to the same thing. Secret societies at UVA are a little different than in other parts of the world: while their membership may be secret, they generally seek to make some impact on the life of the University and therefore can generally muster enough importance to be notable. Without that, I don't think they belong in Wikipedia. I'm willing to entertain other criteria for inclusion, should someone wish to advance them here.Tjarrett (talk) 03:57, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Inclusions and deletions

The P.U.M.P.K.I.N.s and 21 Society were deleted in a previous purge of the list; thanks to whoever re-added. I dug up sufficient citations on both to merit inclusion. Alas, the same can't be said for the Daughters of Liberty and Sons of Liberty. I've been digging a while and can't find a UVA connection, so they're out. Tjarrett (talk) 14:34, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Sons of Liberty just surfaced with a notable citation for a bunch of juvenile pranks, so they're back on the list.Tjarrett (talk) 13:41, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Page rebuild

The page has been transformed from a list into an article with a list. The intent is to present context for the evolution of secret societies at the University, and to provide more information for some of the smaller societies that may not merit their own articles.

The model is based on the structure of Collegiate secret societies in North America, and the intent is to cut down on the amount of drive-by additions of dubious secret societies by raising the perceived quality of the article.

Since this is now less of a list than a regular article, I will also be changing the class of the article from list and would request review of the quality at this stage. Tjarrett (talk) 18:15, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
