A secret admirer is a person who loves someone else without letting that other person know who they are. The admirer may often send gifts or anonymous love letters to their crush. In comparison with stalking, a secret admirer is usually benign, although stalkers may consider themselves to be secret admirers. Mostly, the goal of a secret admirer is to woo the object of their affections, and then to reveal their identity, paving the way for a real relationship. The revealing of a secret admiring usually occurs on Valentines Day, the day of love. Where stalkers try usually to not come in contact, just watching them from afar, secret admirers usually prefer to still be able to talk and hang out with the person in interest.
Many elementary schools and sometimes schools up to secondary schools have children do Valentine's Day projects on Valentine's Day to craft and send "secret admirer" letters to classmates, which may not actually reflect a real "crush" and may be done neutrally or arbitrarily, and, perhaps, if done under duress from the class project requirement, reluctantly.[citation needed]
