Secret Agent Clank is an upcoming platformer developed by High Impact Games exclusively for the PlayStation Portable as a spin-off to the Ratchet & Clank series. The game is set to be released in North America on June 17, 2008[1] and will star Clank as the main character, playing the role of a secret agent. It is the 7th game in the series (6th chronologically), not including the mobile games. It is being developed by High Impact Games, known for their PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable title, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters.
As the title suggests, the theme of the game is a spoof of the James Bond series. To fit with this theme, Clank will be wearing a tuxedo throughout the game. Similar to James Bond, Clank has an array of helpful gadgets and devices on his tuxedo, such as a bow tie that he can use as a boomerang, and a rose that he can transform into a monster that eats enemies. The first appearance of Clank as a secret agent was in Up Your Arsenal.

[edit] Gameplay
Unlike previous Ratchet & Clank games, Clank's gameplay will be more like Ratchet's. In the past, playing him was more about solving puzzles; now, he is a full on action character with weapons and gadgets of his own. Also featured are cutscenes where the player must press a sequence of buttons correctly to sneak through an area undetected[2].
Giant Clank, wherein Clank transforms into a monster-sized fighting machine, will also make an appearance; it's been mentioned that he will soar into the sky, manning a new super-weapon.[citation needed]

Besides Clank, both Captain Qwark and Ratchet will be playable in the game. Qwark's gameplay segments are based on dubious accounts of his own exploits and are more action-based. Ratchet's segments in prison force him to fight with enemies from previous games.
[edit] Weapons and gadgets
Some of the weapons mentioned include the Tierang (bow tie boomerangs), cuff-link bombs, a flame-inducing briefcase, and jet boots. [2][3][4] It is also said that Clank will have a snowboard and amphibious hovercraft[citation needed] . Clank will also be able to upgrade his "Clank-Fu" fighting moves and weapons, similar to weapons upgrading in traditional Ratchet & Clank games. He can learn new techniques, as well as various finishing moves.[5]

This game focuses for the first time in the series on the adventures of the robot sidekick, Clank, and his secret alter-ego, Secret Agent Clank. Set after Size Matters, but before the events of Future: Tools of Destruction, the premise behind Secret Agent Clank surrounds Ratchet as he's framed for a crime that he didn't commit; Ratchet was found guilty because of his "being a hero really doesn't pay" speech. He was either hypnotized or was taken over by the villain. Unfortunately for the hero the trial is skewed against him and he is found guilty. To save his friend, Clank dons his Secret Agent Clank persona and investigates who's behind the accusations. Along the way, he acquires new abilities and weapons. While Clank investigates, Ratchet fights previous henchmen he defeated and Captain Qwark tries to free Ratchet.

Secret Agent Clank received lukewarm reviews, with criticism for its uninspired gameplay, weak storyline, poor music and repetitive level design, managing only a 6.5 from IGN. EGM gave it a 7.5 and the current highest review comes from a spanish site review with a rating of 8.7. As of friday, the average review score is 7.5.[6]

The game has been in development since before the release of Size Matters.[7][8] In July 2007, rumors of the game's existence surfaced when David Bergeaud, who composes music for the Ratchet & Clank series, accidentally revealed the game in his online resume.[5] The actual game was not confirmed by Sony until a pre-TGS 2007 conference. A code found in the IRIS Supercomputer in Future: Tools of Destruction is included for this game. When the code is typed in on the Secret Agent Clank demo, a voice message appears saying "You've unlocked the Zoni skin."
Developers for the company have also stated that PSP users who have a Size Matters save file will be given special bonuses. [8]
Pre-orders from GameStop feature a limited edition of the game with an action-figure of Clank.
