[edit] Overview

Sixty-four were built between 1904 and 1909, with a further two erected in 1915 on the orders of Richard Maunsell which had been ordered and their components built, but not erected earlier.

All entered Southern Railway stock in 1923 and had 1000 added to their numbers.

Two were withdrawn during the Second World War, but the remaining 64 entered British Railways stock in 1948. BR added 30000 to their numbers. The BR numbers were in the range 31005-31554 but there were many gaps because the H class was jumbled up with other classes.

Some members of the H class were equipped for Push-pull train working in 1949.

[edit] Preservation

One locomotive, SECR No. 263 (SR 1263, BR 31263), survives and has been steamed on the Bluebell Railway in Sussex.
