[edit] Welcome to the Wikipedia

Here are some links I thought useful:

Feel free to contact me personally with any questions you might have. The Wikipedia:Village pump is also a good place to go for quick answers to general questions. You can sign your name by typing 4 tildes, like this: ~~~~.

Be Bold!

Thanks for the welcome; I hope I can abide by the rules and contribute something decent to the project :) ∫eb²+1[talk] 00:28, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] I wonder...

I wonder how the heck to customize my ~~~~. Ah well. --Sebbe 22:28, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

You don't. People who want flashy signatures have to do the markup themselves every time (or cook up a template, but I'm pretty sure those are not for signatures), and then sign with five tildes (this produces just the time). This is me entering [[User:JRM|<font color="red">Joost</font> <font color="green"">R.</font> <font color="blue">Meerten</font>]] ~~~~~: Joost R. Meerten 22:44, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)
Overall, you're better off just typing ~~~~. JRM 22:44, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)
Actually I just figured out how to do it :)
Preferences -> Your nickname (for signatures)
E.g. I just set mine to <math>{\int}e^{b^{2}+1}</math>]][[User talk:Sebbe|talk and it displays fine (well, except for the fact that it won't link to this page from here, but it works otherwise :) ) {\int}e^{b^{2}+1} talk 22:54, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
You learn something every day. I do hope you're not planning to make that your permanent signature. :-) JRM 22:57, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)
Indeed not. I think that a) it's too clumsy and b) it'll probably be too much of an unneeded resource hog. This one'll do, hehe ∫eb²+1[talk] 23:12, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Oh, now I see it. Math geek alert!\forall_{x \in\,\textrm{geeks}}({\textrm{silly}.x}) :-) JRM 23:30, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)
Hehe. I'm very much a math nerd; I even bought the domain mathemaniac.org. Not that I know the slightest bit about integrals, though, but it's close enough to an S to be a-ok with me, hehe. Is there any general maximum for indents? I've just got a feeling it might get messy after 20-30 replies... ∫eb²+1[talk] 23:38, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Well, if I had designed them, there would be no limit, but of course practical concerns like the horizontal resolution would eventually interfere... Typically, though, discussions just don't nest this deep. You'd address individual points while editing an article, and start the indent all over again. JRM 00:03, 2004 Nov 14 (UTC)

[edit] Brand new topic

Make sure you visit Wikipedia:BJAODN, Wikipedia:Unusual articles, or just in general, Wikipedia:Department of Fun. This will inspire you to waste precious time better spent on improving articles, and make me feel less guilty about doing the same. JRM 00:03, 2004 Nov 14 (UTC)

Speaking of which, I was quite surprised to actually get a message on my talk page, half an hour after seeing Exploding Wales. Good show, hehe. ∫eb²+1[talk] 00:16, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Mathemaniac.com

Ooh, fractals! I thought those went out of fashion in the 90s. Glad to see there are still people who like them. I see we have some interests in common... Combinatorics and numerical computation aren't my thing, but compilers, parsers and formal logic are right up my alley. (In fact, my master's thesis is about formalizing mathematics in type theory.)

But I'm wasting Wikipedia space! We're here to work on articles, not have merry little chats. Bad me. We can always e-mail each other on such tangential matters, after all...

Oh, look at the time. I'm off to get some well-deserved sleep. If you're in Iran, you're up late (or early), aren't you? :-) JRM 00:03, 2004 Nov 14 (UTC)

Why indeed we are. I'd like to point out, though, that I own mathemaniac.org, not mathemaniac.com. Anyway, let's continue this discussion tomorrow over email instead and let the poor sods who probably want to tell me off do so here :). #REDIRECT [[Email]]. ∫eb²+1[talk] 00:16, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Agentic

Are you sure this isn't a dictionary definition? I expect "agentic" is the adjective form of "agency", right? What do you think should go in this article that doesn't belong in the main agency article? (Note that nothing links to agentic—this doesn't necessarily mean the article is bad, but it is a sign that the concept isn't referenced anywhere else in the 'pedia.) (Oh, and note also that I know nothing about the topic, so this is just a sanity check.) JRM 09:27, 2004 Nov 15 (UTC)

My thoughts exactly; I just cleaned up the article and have no idea whether or not to keep it or redirect or ... ∫eb²+1[talk] 09:42, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
If an "agentic person" is literally "a person with agency", then it's definitely a dicdef, and a redirect would be best (since "agentic" is not completely obvious as the adjective to "(human) agency". JRM 09:52, 2004 Nov 15 (UTC)
True. I'll let someone who knows what they're doing handle it, though.∫eb²+1[talk] 10:26, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I've taken that as an invitation. :-) JRM 10:33, 2004 Nov 15 (UTC)

[edit] The Humungous Image Tagging Project

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Hope you don't mind, but I copied the "QuickLinks" box on your user page, and modified it a bit to make the template shown opposite. All the best, -- Nickj 02:25, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
