Texas
As long as the template name hasn't changed, I don't need to update anything. Let me know if you want me to auto-tag anything (like class=stub for all articles in a stub category, or images/cats/etc). Ingrid 17:34, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- Good, Yes, I was hoping you could tag the cats and images, those would take alot of time. The stubs would still need an importance, so we'll just let people take those. Thanks. Joe I 01:46, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- I did miss this. I have your page watched, but missed it anyway. I've gotten all the other namespace articles tagged. Let me know if anything else comes up. Did I also miss a reply about Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronics? I had trouble telling which categories to tag, so I took a break. If you can give me some more information, using Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronics/Categories (tell me if any of those need to be untagged to start with -- I think I had other questions too, which should be in your talk archive. I've forgotten). Ingrid 20:10, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
- I haven't looked at electronics lately, but I'll look thru Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronics/Categories. I'm thinking that probably the electronic companies should be tagged, but other than that, I'm not sure. Thanks for the work on Texas tho. :) Joe I 20:22, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Broken help template
You gave me a "help" template, which I used. It gave me the following message:
"You can get immediate help from {}, your on-duty Wikipedia:Help desk manager. Just click here to leave a message, and you will get an answer within minutes!
If you think your question has been asked before, then please review the list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) as arranged below."
However, the "click here" link doesn't work and I'm not sure where the FAQ is supposed to show up. I can do this first article okay on my own. Still, it may be a good idea to fix this thing.

Fast editing
You seem to be acting as a bot, I'm going to ask you to slow down a bit, and give me a reply on my talk page. You are editing rather fast over a long period of time. If the task can be done by using a WP:BOT you should request permission at WP:BRFA. Please stop, and reply, I'd hate to have to block as an unauthorized bot. Thank you. —— Eagle101 Need help? 04:21, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- Please try to slow down the pace of editing, or just wait on the bot request, less manual work :) (reply on my page) —— Eagle101 Need help? 04:29, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- Oh if you are there, do both! Just try to keep the pace of editing down, or just make a list that we can feed to a bot. Bots don't have to go by just categories you know :) I'll put you in contact with User:Betacommand who I think can run your job for you, unless you have your own bot. (just get WP:AWB, and request permission on WP:BRFA. (reply on my talk page). —— Eagle101 Need help? 04:36, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

I do untag them manually, but having them in the exclusion list means that I won't try to retag them. I found my original questions on your talk page, here [1]. Basically, I just asked you to also check the exclusion list to see if I'd excluded anything that should be included (I tried to be conservative). Ingrid 20:58, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

US county lists
I created Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. counties/county lists as a place to keep track of the all the lists of US counties by state, as well as provde a place to ensure common standards. Plus, it provides a chance to focus as a group on a few states at a time, rather than spreading our efforts out thinkly. Tompw (talk) (review) 15:38, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
adminship
Hey, I've seen some of your work across many aspects of wikipedia, and was wondering if you would like to consider adminship. I think you would pass at WP:RFA, and we could use more admins who know their way around portals. Let me know of your reply :)--Wizardman 03:03, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well, first off, thanks for your confidence. I've been avoiding adminship for so long now. I never had the time nor the want of the responsibilities. But, I do have more available time now, so maybe I can be persuaded. I'll take alittle time to look around Wikipedia:Administrators pages. If there's anything else you could fill me in on, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll see and let ya know. Joe I 05:08, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- Alright. I'll create the nomination page. When I'm done I'll give you the link. Just answer the questions and put it on the main page. Then watch for anyone that asks other questions and the like.--Wizardman 01:34, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

List of counties in Texas
I'm afraid the template doesn't allow extra notes in the county name cell... name=Anderson
gets turned into Anderson County. I could tweak the template to allow name notes; the "origin" column could be re-named "history", with things re-phrased to match; or the offending cells could be re-phrased to make it clear that which county exsisted under a different name. Which would you prefer? By the way, it appears that Cass County was created in 1876, but named Davis County 1861-1871... something's out there. Tompw (talk) (review) 09:35, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Question regarding US Military terms of address
Hi,
I hope you don't mind me contacting you out of the blue. I noticed you were the most frequent editor of the US Military portal, so I hope you can answer my question. I have a vague surety that in one of the branches, all officers (male or female) are addressed as "Sir". But, I can't remember which branch. And I can't seem to devise a set of search terms/criteria that can tell me which branch it is. Do you know? If not, do you know where I can find out? I'd appreciate any help or guidance.
Thank you, --ktoonen 19:00, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- Well, I don't think that females are called "sir" in any branch. The most likely would be the Marine Corps, which I was in, and that was hugely frowned upon, women officers were ma'am. But, you could try asking over at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/United States military history task force. Someone over there will know for sure. By the way, when you sign your name you can use ~~~~, four tildes, which will automatically link your name to your user page. If you need anything else, please let me know. Joe I 04:49, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
-
- Thanks for being so kind. Two things...
- When I signed, I used the little signature icon (10th from the left) in the row of icons that is standard on the edit screen. I did notice that my signature didn't come up hot, and was wondering why. Is there a way to make that icon insert a hot signature? Do I need to change something under "my preferences"? (In my preview screen, ~~~~ isn't coming up hot either...)
- I'm not exactly sure what makes it link. In preferences, make sure your name is enclosed in brakets, and links to your user page(mine is <font color="#C0C0C0">Joe</font><font color="#708090"> I</font>), and "Raw signature" is clicked. Beyond that, I've not a clue. You could ask over at the help desk.
- While looking at the US Military portal, I noticed a tab of "Things that need doing". Well, I know very little about the military. But I also noticed that you made the Texas Portal. I don't see a "You can help us by doing X" there, however. I'm from Texas originally, and am a librarian, so I thought maybe I could help out there. Is that section of Wikipedia pretty much "set", or do y'all still need help? Let me know.
- The Texas portal's thngs you can do, is located on the left side, almost all the way down. Or you can go here. Theres also Wikipedia:WikiProject Texas.
- Cheers, and thanks again,
- ktoonen 15:44, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for being so kind. Two things...
-
- p.s. Thanks much for putting your reply on my talk page too! You said at the head of this page that you would answer here, so I'd been watching your talk page. It was a nice surprise, and very kind. If it saves you trouble, you can answer only here this time. I'll be watching. ;-)
Well, from an unlikely source, I think I may have figured out what I was thinking. You can chuckle, but promise not to thwap me too hard, ok? <grin>
So, I was watching the first episode of the TV show Star Trek: Voyager. In it, Captain Janeway comments that she doesn't believe in the "normal Starfleet" proceedure of calling female officers "Sir". So, that "US Military Branch" might just have been Starfleet. <ahem>
This is what comes of reading too much Sci-Fi and watching TV. I'd never really watched Voyager before, but I've watched Star Trek and its spin-offs over the years. I also read some of the novels as part of a genre study. So, I'm betting it slipped into my subconscious. Since I've always thought the Federation was modeled on US governmental ideals, I guess I reversed my metaphor and remembered a US government military organization... Maybe this is *really* what comes of being too easily distracted by randomness. <grin> Ah well.
Cheers, --ktoonen 19:34, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Texans-in-Exile
Well, I think I solved my sig problem. You tell me. ;-) I did look at how you had yours set up. I think by changing the capitalization, I messed-up the auto-linking ability...
I can blame an internship at Argonne National Laboratory for my being in IL. While there I meet someone and got married. I grew up outside Amarillo and went to school outside Dallas. My sister now lives in Austin. So those are the parts of the state I know.
I only graduated with my MLIS in December, so I'm sort of burned out on LIS-speak. Job hunting probably isn't helping. Thanks for pointing out the Wikipedia LIS project, but I think I'll wait a while...
I have discovered if I'm hallucinating or if one of the branches of military calls all officers, regardless of gender, "Sir". If/When I do find out, I'll let you know. I agree that if I'd been placing bets I would have guessed Marines...
Cheers,

Unicode
Hey, I was hoping you could help me. I would like to find the unicode for the Greek Iota, most specifically like Image:Greek uc iota.png (first choice) or Image:Greek lc iota.png (second). It's for my sig. I know most people see the "I" as a line instead of an I, the greek letter should add a nice touch. Anyways, if you could please, thanks. Joe I 07:00, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- The capital Greek letter iota is Ι, which will most likely render like Latin I. Iota's unicode number is 0399 in hexadecimal or 921 decimal so alternatively you can type Ι or Ι and your browser will render the same character. But if your concern is that the I is only a straight line, which is very hard to click, then it's a font problem. Try

Log actions
I was correcting WP:LA (your username had been misspelt on it), and while I was verifying that you were an admin (of course, you are, the RfA was suggestive and the listusers entry made certain), I noticed something strange about your log. According to your log, you appear to have never done any logged actions; no admin actions, no image uploads, no page moves at all ever. Is this actually correct, or has something gone wrong with the log? --ais523 17:47, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I believe that's correct. I just gained adminship less than a week ago, so I haven't yet had the chance to do much. I may have had image uploads way back long time ago, but it may have just been to commons, I can't remember. Joe I 02:35, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
- By the way, I saw on your user page you're into templates. Could you take a look at Template:WikiProject Indiana for me? There's a note on the talk page. I had trouble changing it, I think due to the comments section, which I would like to keep. Thanks. :) Joe I 02:41, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Archives link problem
Hello. The following responses on Template talk:Archive box might interest you.
Linking problem
Hey can someone look at User talk:Searchme? It shows the archives as valid links, but they are not clickable. I tried using this a long time ago, with the same results, which is why I didn't use it then. Thanks. Joe I 05:29, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
- Good question. Nothing seems to be wrong with your page in terms of coding, especialy there. Maybe it's a browser parsing error. --JB Adder | Talk 05:41, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
-
- The problem is caused by the following block of code on your page:
-
- The template floats to the right of the ad container's original position, so that it is actually behind the advertisement before the CSS repositions it. I suspect that your browser leaves a sort of phantom layer behind, or extends the layer from the original position to the new position; either way, it covers the links, so that you are clicking on the advertisement layer instead of the archives box layer.
-
- Removing the advertisements fixes the problem, as does forcing the advertisement layer away from the box with
<br clear="all" />
after the archive list template. —{admin} Pathoschild 06:06:47, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Did you know archive
I have added a "prod" template to the article Did you know archive, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. --Finngall talk 19:34, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Missing fair use rationales
When you are going through images that appear to be eligible for speedy deletion, please consider adding a rationale of your own if you think that they may be worth keeping. A huge number of images have been tagged as lacking a rationale, and while I have been trying to add rationales where I could to images that I have never seen before, there are just too many for me to fix. I wish the people who added the "Missing fair use rationales" tags could have gone more slowly or added some fair use rationales themselves. --Eastmain 07:15, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, I guess that's fair enough, never really thought about it. I'll see what I can do. Joe I 07:19, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
Texas people
That is odd that the bot missed those. I have no idea why. I haven't been around much recently (and am not sure when I'll get more time). I need to update the bot a bit before I can tag anything new. It's on my to do list though, and I'll let you know when it's done. Ingrid 17:21, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
More template help
Hey, would you mind taking a look at Template:WikiProject Indiana? There's a comment on the talk page. I had some else look at it, but I'm not real sure about his answer. I would like it to look like the numismaticnotice, that's fairly simple and I can almost understand it all. :) I think the comments section was messing me up, but I would like to keep it. Thanks if you could. Joe I 18:07, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
- Just want to let you know I have not forgotten about this. Instead of fixing one instance (Project Indiana), I will try to fix all by introducing a root template. Currently I'm still trying to catch up on my watch list. I will need your help on identifying the key features and obscure cases of these project banners, since you seem to be doing this a lot. You can track my watch list progress in my to-do box, the second time stamp (in UTC-7). When it catches up with "now", that means I'm done. If I forget about it, please remind me. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 22:06, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

page merge
I just redirected Talk:National Currency Act to Talk:National Banking Act, since the article is already a redirect. I was going to copy the assessment cut/paste into the Talk:NBA page, since I couldn't just do a move. Then it occurred to me that that would remove the edit history, which I'm not supposed to do for GFDL. You were the one who assessed it, so would you either re-add the assessment Start/low to the right page, or merge the edit history or something? Thanks Ingrid 14:12, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Texas tagging
I just finished retagging categories -- there were quite a few new ones. If you (or the project) is interested, I generated a somewhat formatted list of them at Wikipedia:WikiProject Texas/Categories. I'll start tagging articles now. Ingrid 00:43, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello, I was trying to give Clostefire a message and their user page looks horrible, apparently because of your welcoming message. Please fix their User page and please consider reworking your welcome message so this won't happen in the future. Thanks. If you wish to respond to this please use my take page. Energy portal featured candidature
Hi Joe. You were kind enough to contribute to the energy portal peer review back in March, since when it has been developed substantially. The portal is now under consideration as a featured portal, but has had remarkably few people contributing to the debate, compared to other candidates. If you have time on return from your Wikibreak perhaps you would like to take a look? The candidate page can be found here. Regards Gralo 22:53, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Portal:Heavy metal
I believe I've addressed all your objection at Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/Portal:Heavy metal, except for one: "Timelines and lists should be including in either the cats or topics box." Could you please clarify this? Thanks for your indepth review. CloudNine 12:23, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
-
- So, before I add the "Heavy metal lists" category to a lot of pages, this page is the kind of page it should be added to? (Just want to make sure before I embark on adding the cat to a lot of pages). CloudNine 22:08, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
-
- Yep. Generally everything with a "List of" title. There is atleast one cat allready, Category:Lists of metal bands, articles here need not be in the main cat as long as you add the whole cat to Category:Heavy metal lists. I would add the timelines cat as well, but I'm not sure if everyone feels the same.
-
- There's not a huge amount of heavy metal lists (Google mostly turns up those in Category:List of metal bands), but I've done what I can. Could you offer a final opinion at the FPoC? CloudNine 19:12, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Anya Teixeira
External Links I have added a list of books and articles as a resource,They disappear. But why since the list I have added for Morris Gest remains. JLGordon —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jlgordon (talk • contribs) 18:08, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hey, I see no record of the sources you're referring to on Anya Teixeira. I would suggest adding a resource heading, instead of adding them under external links. If this doesn't work, just leave one of the links here on my page and I'll try to set it up. Joe I 04:05, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
FL Main page proposal
You either nominated a WP:FLC or closed such a nomination recently. As such, you are the type of editor whose opinion I am soliciting. We now have over 400 featured lists and seem to be promoting in excess of 30 per month of late (41 in August and 42 in September). When Today's featured article (TFA) started (2004-02-22), they only had about 200 featured articles and were barely promoting 20 new ones per month. I think the quality of featured lists is at least as good as the quality of featured articles was when they started appearing on the main page. Thus, I am ready to open debate on a proposal to institute a List of the Day on the main page with nominations starting November 1, 2007, voting starting December 1, 2007 and main page appearances starting January 1, 2008. For brevity, the proposal page does not discuss the details of eventual main page content, but since the work has already been done, you should consider this proposal assuming the eventual content will resemble the current content at the featured content page. Such output would probably start at the bottom of the main page. The proposal page does not debate whether starting with weekly list main page entries would be better than daily entries. However, I suspect persons in favor of weekly lists are really voicing opinions against lists on the main page since neither TFA nor Picture of the day started as weekly endeavors, to the best of my knowledge. Right now debate seems to be among support for the current selective democratic/consensus based proposal, a selective dictatorial approach like that used at WP:TFA or a non-selective first in line/calendar approach like that used at WP:POTD. See the List of the Day proposal and comment at WP:LOTDP and its talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 19:34, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Featured Portals
I just thought i should tell you that when you promoted Portal:Puerto Rico, you didn't update the template on the featured content page. Because i write Features and Admins, i look there to see if stuff has been promoted. Would you be able to update this template in the future? The Placebo Effect 15:20, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- I usually do, just forgot I guess. I'll make sure I get it in the future. Joe I 05:23, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Careers Portal
Yes I am interested. If we could get a template example going it could sustain itself. Sorry hadn't logged in a while so didn't notice your message.DodgeTheBullet 20:55, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- This is the main use case I was considering: Some young person - still far from entering the work force wants to learn more about the possibilities. I like Portal:Occupations because I think most of the input would be people describing their fields and what their jobs consist of day to day. I don't know where these kinds of articles would stand with the no original research dictum. For instance, I, a software engineer, would write or add to an article - hopefully from a template describing what a typical software engineer does and what the profession in general is like. I don't think it is vocational education because for instance, I wouldn't go into detail about a specific programming language.DodgeTheBullet 21:50, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- Go ahead with Portal:Employment - you are right that occupations can always be a tab of the broader portal.DodgeTheBullet 21:08, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

What is Tag & Assess MMVII? We'd better explain. A month or so back, we ran a script to list all the articles in categories related to military history. This gave us about 165,000 articles. Some of these are already tagged and assessed as military history; some are military history but not yet tagged and assessed; some are not military history articles at all. This huge project — working thorough 165,000 articles — is called Tag & Assess 2007. To make it manageable, the list has been broken down into 330 ranges each of 500 articles. This is where you can help. Just... adopt-a-range from the available worklists then keep track of your tally on participants' list. The tagging is easy, just follow the simple instructions. Afterwards, as our way of thanking you, you'll be presented with service awards and barnstars based on the number of articles you process. Remember... the ranges are broken down into sub-sections of ten articles, so you work through them at twenty or thirty articles a day if you wish. To make Tag & Assess 2007 a success, we need your help. Please sign up now. Thanks. |

Thanks for noticing my typo
Good job noticing my typo in the article Ottawa Islands. 1497 is the correct date instead of 1947. I assume it must have been fairly easy to verify given the fact I almost always give proper references for almost every thing I do? Thank you again and good one! --CyclePat 02:32, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
Featured portals
Hello Joe, I'm pretty familiar with the promotion process. The only thing that I didn't do is updating Wikipedia:Featured content/Portals. Why? If you compare the list on Wikipedia:Featured portals with Wikipedia:Featured content/Portals, you will find that a lot of portals are missing in the Featured content/Portals. I don't have much time to update every single one of them (until probably the end of December). Perhaps you can try sychronize those 2 pages? OhanaUnitedTalk page 14:45, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- Both pages are in sync. I went thru Wikipedia:Featured content/Portals a couple of weeks ago. There are(were) 76 featured portals, all reflected on each page. You didn't address my concerns over the promotion of Portal:Military of Greece, which was my main intention. Joe I 03:45, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
-
- Some of your concerns are trivial, such as the formatting. I can see that the nom has made attempts to improve it. If we're really picky on things, then nothing gets done. Remember, we still have to follow consensus even in featured portals. OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:04, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Featured List of the Day Experiment
There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You may submit multiple lists for consideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 17:52, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Spiffier triple crown, new awards available
Hi, I've been sprucing up the triple crown awards. Here's the new version of the standard triple crown you've already earned. Feel free to replace your old one with this if you like the new version better. I've also introduced two new triple crown awards for editors who've done a lot of triple crown work: the Napoleonic and Alexander the Great edition awards. If you're active in a WikiProject, check out the new offer for custom WikiProject triple crowns. I'll make those upon request if five or more editors qualify. See User:Durova/Triple crown winner's circle for more information. Thanks for your hard work, and cheers! DurovaCharge! 21:39, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
Puerto Rican peso
I was just wondering why you reverted my edit. --Pasajero (talk) 10:27, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- Cause peso does not refer to the US dollar as a whole. If you wish to infer that the use of the dollar has all but replaced the Puerto Rican peso, and therefore called the "peso" in Puerto Rico(which I'm assuming you meant), please explain what you mean thoroughly. And may I suggest logging in for your edits to not be automatically reverted. Joe I 18:47, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello! Long time no see. I was just wondering, seeing as you have your name listed here and you have some amazing featured portals under your belt, whether you could provide any suggestions on how to improve the Gibraltar portal which I hope to get up to FP status in the long run? I opened a peer review some time ago too. Many thanks and Merry Christmas, Chris.B (talk) 16:17, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
