[edit] VandalProof!
Thx - that was quick response :) --Trödel 17:00, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks, I do have a request
Please for the love of God place a link/sentence to the latest stable release in the lead, and also link 1.2.2 in the Software template to the latest release. I find it hard to find it buried under 1.3 notes; and also find the 1.2.2 patch link confusing if I just want the install latest release. - RoyBoy 800 17:02, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Richwales STILL unable to use VandalProof
I'm sorry, but I tried it again now (after you said you were sure I was in the authorized user list now), and I'm still getting the error box with "Your log-in request failed." Richwales 20:51, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
- You asked which version of VP I'm using. It's 1.2.2. Richwales 16:07, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- Sorry, but even after you fixed the problem about my being in the user list twice, it still doesn't work. I'm still getting the "Your log-in request failed" error box. And even after I clicked on the "logging into Wikipedia" link inside the error box and logged in again (successfully), I continue to get "Your log-in request failed". And just in case there's a problem with my using Firefox (1.5.0.7) as my default browser, I also fired up IE and logged in to my Wikipedia account in IE; still no luck. Richwales 22:49, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Approved? Not approved?
Not that I'm complaining or anything, but I assumed that since Glen rejected my application a few days ago, I wouldn't still be considered for VandalProof... CNash 22:01, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
- I have replied on your talk page myself but will add here for Xyrael's reference too. Currently both Xyrael and I are finding problems with the VP moderating feature, and it seems while I did not approve you due to your application not meeting the minimum edit requirement, your name was not removed from the list. So, some days later it seems you have! I have removed my initial post - apologies for the confusion and welcome to our team! Glen 01:36, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Robert ÆOLUS Myers
Xyrael -
The above sited article presently in AFD process has been deemed by the nominator and one other as being a candidate for deletion. You were kind enough to relist the article for another round of scrutiny to which there have been no bites post revision edit, this revision being suggested as a potential strengthening of the material. Is there a way to garner additional views of the article "to generate a more thorough discussion so that consensus may be reached"?

[edit] Vegetarian?
Then if things truly are proked <--lol :) *ahem* Porked... its much worse than we thought! ;) Glen 18:40, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
- That's okay its not terribly funny! I just meant if you're a carnivore and things are porked then that's bad. If you're a vego - then shit, thats dreadful! ;) Glen 19:02, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #5
This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. The WikiProject has its own IRC channel.
"TD's should be bolded, as they are the impetus of every storm, weak or strong."
Storm of the month
Hurricane Ioke is the most intense hurricane on record in the Central Pacific. After forming on August 19 to the south of Hawaii, Ioke moved to the northwest and hit Johnston Atoll as a Category 2 hurricane. It strengthened further as it moved to the west, reaching Category 5 strength on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale three times, twice in the Central Pacific and once in the Western Pacific. After the storm entered the Western Pacific it directly hit Wake Island. The storm finally became extratropical on September 7 but its extratropical remnants affected Alaska. Overall damage from Hurricane Ioke was light.
Other tropical cyclone activity
- 4 hurricanes formed in the Atlantic: Hurricane Florence, Hurricane Gordon, Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Isaac. Florence affected Bermuda and Newfoundland, and Gordon had effects in the Azores and Europe. Isaac is currently forecast to affect Newfoundland as an extratropical storm.
- The east Pacific saw three hurricanes and a tropical storm develop. Hurricane John and Hurricane Lane were both major hurricanes which hit Mexico, whilst Hurricane Kristy and Tropical Storm Miriam stayed clear of land. In addition, two tropical depressions formed in the Central Pacific.
- There were 4 typhoons in west Pacific during September. Typhoon Shanshan, Typhoon Yagi and Typhoon Xangsane formed in the west Pacific and Typhoon Ioke entered the basin from the east. Shanshan killed at least 9 people in Japan and Typhoon Xangsane, which is still active, killed at least 72 in the Philippines.
- Two tropical cyclones formed in the North Indian Ocean during September. Severe Cyclonic Storm Mukda formed in the Arabian Sea but did not affect land and Tropical Cyclone 05B formed in the Bay of Bengal before making landfall in India. However, the deadliest tropical system of September was a depression in the Bay of Bengal that killed more than 170 people in Bangladesh.

[edit] Speedy unblock of User:60.49.97.254
User was blanking what we reverters did not realise was patent nonsense. It was done in good faith, and I have alerted the user to the proper procedure for reverting such content. Block was mistakenly requested. You can see the difference between the previous version and the version I reverted it to here: user was trying to get rid of offensive material. Once they are unblocked I will welcome them properly. Thanks in advance :)— Editor at Large(speak) 10:44, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

He came to Akademi Fantasia in 2020 as a time traveller who found it awkward to even take a few dance steps, however Asahina-san from The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi has taught Mawi the basics of time travel and therefore he has been trapped in a time paradox in which he has sex with a sheep over and over.
The whole article had been changed in an article-like way so nobody picked it up... except this persistant IP, who reverted it 33 times until we picked up what he was trying to delete. Poor guy! — Editor at Large(speak) 18:17, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Hey there! I posted a response to your AfD comment that you may wish to take a look at. Additionally (and this is just a suggestion), I think it would be a good idea to mention your position with Freenode in the AfD, in the interest of making our biases as transparent as possible (another reason why I need to redesign my User page ). [edit] NBGPWS
Hi Xyrael, you blocked NBGPWS (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · block user · block log) before so I want to know if you think the following disruption/incivility is worth pursuing. In my opinion, he is disrupting a current AfD and I want to know if this fits his previous behavior or is this something new that should be given some leeway.
[1][2][3][4][5][6]
There are more but you get the point. I think, but obviously can't prove, that he spammed this to DU and that's the reason there are so many SPA accounts responding. If it's part of his previous pattern, I can take it the noticeboard. --Tbeatty 09:30, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re:Lostpedia
Hello, I am by no means attempting to start an argument, but would just like reasoning for the speedy deletion of the Lostpedia article, considering I personally added the "hangon" template in the hope of actual discussion. As this was added, I can't see why the page was still immediately deleted when all I had asked was for discussion about it first --Nickb123 3rd 17:48, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- It should also be noted that the user who nominated the article for deletion, MatthewFenton has ulterior motives for requesting deletion. He was banned from lostpedia for vandalizing the wiki. --Jabrwocky7 17:56, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- It's been deleted three times previously. It's not notable, and lostcruft. Simple as. Will (Glaciers melting in the dead of night) 19:06, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- The site has gained considerable notability over the last 6 months as was noted in the discussion page for the article. When the article was originally created, notability was not covered in the article. Nickb was in the process of updating the article to show notability for the site when it was deleted. This site has been featured in business week, used by The Lost Experience to host a clue and distribute a glyph (Rachel Blake), and was a Sci-Fi site of the week. These are only a few examples. Jimbo Wales himself has an account on this wiki. Please reconsider this speedy deletion and allow us some time to update the article with notability statements. --Jabrwocky7 19:46, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- On second thoughts, it does seem to pass WP:WEB, although this should be continued on the article's talk page. Will (Glaciers melting in the dead of night) 20:17, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Xyrael - Thank you for unprotecting the Talk:Lostpedia page so the deletion of this article can be discussed. I believe Nickb has stated our case on the discussion, but wanted your advice on how to proceed. The template on the article suggests to contact the admin that protected the page (you), or list it for undeletion review. Would it be possible to unprotect the page for a while so a new page can be written (one that includes documentation of notability and historical involvement in The Lost Experience)? I don't believe the article will get a fair chance at review unless there is some content to review. The only person that seems to have problem with the article at this time is MatthewFenton and he seems to have a vendetta against the site because he was banned for vandalism. Thanks, --Jabrwocky7 00:49, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi. Thanks for your reply. Would you care to weigh in on the deletion review for the Lostpedia article? Thanks, --Jabrwocky7 22:25, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The 4400 Afd
Hi. I'd just like to know your reasoning for closing the AfD as a keep. As far as I could see, the most logical and convincing arguments came from User:Yaksha and User:Fram, who made very good arguments for delete or alternatively merge. In response, none of the "keep" debaters made a convincing argument. IMHO most of the reasons provided were not within policy/guidelines and were very tenuous at best. Since Afd is NOT supposed to be a vote-count, and given the relative strength of the arguments on both sides, I would have fallen on the side of Merge in this case. I look forward to your response. Zunaid (T•C) Please rate me at Editor Review! 08:18, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- It answers my question about why you closed it as keep, but I still think, with all due respect, that your reasoning was flawed. "The OPINION of the community" in this case was not backed up by any solid reasoning, and should mean nought. Remember, a large number of voters in any AfD are no doubt editors of the articles in question (I was, quite accidentally, a drive-by voter who happens to be a huge fan of the series). The mere fact that they weigh-in and vote "keep" in numbers means nothing if they don't supply valid reasons for their opinion. This is why we have sockpuppet and meatpuppet disclaimers, to remind people that votes are NOT counted, and that only good reasoning will carry the day. But anyway, I wanted to know if the WP:DRV process could be used in this case, as I strongly feel that most admins would have closed this as a Merge or Delete. Zunaid©Please rate me at Editor Review! 11:47, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
- Plenty of strong reasons where provided as to why the pages should be kept and a consensus was judged as keep.. even if it wasnot a keep it would of been a no consensus, the only reason they where able to provide was that they "where not complete enough..". thanks/Fenton, Matthew Lexic Dark 52278 Alpha 771 13:09, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
No, actually, that's not the case at all. Plenty of very strong reasons where provided as to why the pages should be deleted or at least merged. These included:
- A very direct violation of "wikipedia is not a indiscriminate collection of information". With extra emphsis on the section titled "plot summary" ("Wikipedia articles on works of fiction should contain real-world context and sourced analysis, offering detail on a work's achievements, impact or historical significance, not solely a summary of that work's plot. A plot summary may be appropriate as an aspect of a larger topic."). Articles (e.g. Blink (The 4400 episode)) have none of those things which we want (real world context...etc), and is exactly what it shouldn't be (solely a summary of the work's plot).
- The articles are at best a scene-by-scene analysis, directly against recommendations from the consensus reached in this centralized discussion. ("Elements which are best avoided in any episode article: A scene-by-scene synopsis. ")
- information is unverifiable as per arguments by Fram which i'm not going to try summarize here.
On the other hand, those who wanted to keep the articles had no strong reasons at all. If you read the AfD carefully, you'll notice the keep side were basically revolving around three arguments
- "articles have room for future expansion" - doesn't justify a violation of WP:NOT or WP:V
- "plenty of other TV series have articles" - invalid, because many more TV series don't have articles. Also irrelevant. What one TV series has doesn't justify 4400 having it.
- "4400 is very notable" - misleading strawman argument. 4400 is certainly notable. But that doesn't make individual episodes notable enough for articles.
Matthew's own reason was "lack of content is not justifcation for deletion" - which is flawed, because the articles weren't nominated just for lack of conetent. Even if lack of content may not justify deletion, balantly breaking of WP:NOT most certainly does. --`/aksha 04:40, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] VP Ongoing Issue
For some reason my name has been removed from the list of authorized users. I was added by Betacommand here [7], and he welcommed me here[8]. I had difficulties using it, did everything I could myself, was unable to, so I requested assistance here [9]. Instead of assistance, I was removed from the list. Because I have had difficulties on wikipedia recieving help from administrators when requested, this message is in essence a generic template I am writing on all moderators' talk pages and discussion boards in the hopes of recieving if nothing else a response - ideally, however, a solution. Thank you very much and apologies for my impatience. Gregorof/(T) 05:38, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #6
This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. The WikiProject has its own IRC channel.
"THIS IS THE LAST PUBLIC ADVISORY ISSUED ON THIS USER UNLESS REGENERATION OCCURS"
Storm of the month
Typhoon Xangsane, known as Typhoon Milenyo in the Philippines was a destructive typhoon that affected the Philippines and Indochina. The storm caused severe flooding and landslides in the regions it affected and was responsible for at least 279 deaths and $747 million (USD) in damage, mostly in the Philippines and Vietnam. Xangsane formed to the east of the Philippines and rapidly intensified, striking Samar Island as a Category 4 typhoon. It weakened over the Philippines, but again reached Category 4 strength in the South China Sea. After its landfall in Vietnam, the typhoon dissipated, with its remnant crossing Indochina and entering the Bay of Bengal.
Other tropical cyclone activity
- Hurricane Isaac, which formed in September, hit Newfoundland with minimal effects on October 2. It was the only Atlantic storm in October.
- One hurricane, Hurricane Paul, formed in the eastern Pacific and hit Mexico. There were also two tropical storms, Norman and Olivia, and two tropical depressions in the basin.
- In addition to Typhoon Xangsane, two further typhoons and two tropical storms developed in the west Pacific. Typhoon Soulik and Tropical Storms Bebinca and Rumbia both stayed clear of land, whilst Typhoon Cimaron hit the Philippines killing at least 19 people there, before it dissipated in the South China Sea.
- The North Indian Ocean saw one storm, Cyclonic Storm Ogni form in the Bay of Bengal.
- The 2006-2007 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season got underway, with Tropical Cyclone Xavier forming to the west of Fiji. There were two further tropical depressions in the South Pacific and a tropical disturbance in the South Indian Ocean.
New articles and improvements wanted
Member of the month
The October Member of the Month is Coredesat. Coredesat joined the WikiProject in March and has contributed to many diverse areas within the project. He has written two featured articles on Atlantic storms and a number of good articles on current typhoons. However, the article he is most proud of is a disambiguation page, a sorely neglected portion of the project.

Tropical cyclone scales
The various agencies which report on tropical cyclones use a variety of different scales to measure the storms strength. The most familiar of these is the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale and this is the de facto standard in the project and should be used everywhere. However, as it is only official in the Atlantic and East Pacific, other local scales should be used when discussing storms in other regions and given primacy over the Saffir-Simpson Scale. The Saffir-Simpson scale is based on 1-minute averages, but other scales are generally based upon 10-minute averages, which are approximately 15% lower.
This table provides a useful-at-a-glance comparison of the various scales currently in use. Further complications arise due to the fact different agencies obtain different estimates for the same storm at the same time, so be careful to use the most appropriate source agency.

Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.
Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
