I have stayed away from trying to do this intro. Maybe we'll never get it right, and in a sense WP can't by itself solve the 'first contact with mathematics' problem.

My own view is historical. At the beginning of the 20th century mathematics was considered to consist of three areas: algebra, analysis, geometry. At the end, to consist of: algebra, analysis, geometry plus computing. Various things happened in between. The draft is reaching for the kind of definition generally accepted in the period 1950-1980. Not surprising. But I think the article should step back a little from insisting on that.
