[edit] Membership

The text says there are 60K members, the infobox says 80K. Both seem very, very high. Haus42 20:56, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree. I would like to see a source for that number. The Occupational Outlook Handbook shows about 28,000 unlicensed merchant mariners employed in 2004. It also shows that roughly double that are actually mariners because many only work part of the year. It also shows that about 36% are in unions (SIU being by far the largest). So, very roughly, that comes to about 20,000 mariners working for the union. That would mean either there are 40,000+ pensioners or the number is wildly off. I know, my napkin math could be way off. I'm just trying to come up with a ballpark figure and 20,000 is way, way off of 60,000+. Prometheusg 21:39, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
I found and added statistics from the DOL. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to provide direct links... Haus42 15:30, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] POV

I'm removing this bit: "and is the strongest maritime labor organization in the U.S. to date." SIUNA's total membership is 34K. ISU lost 30,000 sailors to NMU in 1937. The claim just doesn't hold water. Haus42 15:30, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Controversy

In the year 2000 I had turned 40 and applied to this program and was denied.I filed a compliant with the EEOC and did so on behalf of all members of this class.several years later the EEOC brought the case before the federal district court in Baltimore maryland. By 2004 the apprenticeship program and the SIU appealed to the 4Th circuit court claiming that the EEOC did not have jurisdition over apprenticeship programs

as it does other employeers. The 4th circuit court did not agree and remanded the case back to the distric court judge for trial. The apprenticeship school and the union started settlement talks with the EEOC and an agreement was reached and the judge agreed to the settlement. the EEOC shall moniter the SIU and the school for a period of 5 years.the class agent ( myself) and 180 + other plientifs recieved monetary awards. the judge orderd all of us and any future members of the class to be admited to the school.

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:ModSIU.gif

Image:ModSIU.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
