[edit] History & Background

Seaside Radio was set up in 2003 as part of a community based communication and entertainment radio project under the name of "Seaside Radio Ltd" by former Holderness Gazette editor Lyz Turner. However, Seaside FM actually dates back to Easter 2001 when a temporary broadcast was set up in Keyingham known then as Seaside Radio, the signal was also picked up in both Withernsea and the borders of Kingston upon Hull. After the broadcast, it was thought that Seaside Radio could be developed further. A further number of small broadcasts took place in various places around then East Coast including Bridlington and Filey [1]. In November 2005, Ofcom awarded the station a full time licence on the frequency of 105.3 MHz [2].

On 7 December 2006, Seaside FM passed an Ofcom inspection and was given the green light to start broadcasting.

Seaside FM transmits from permanent premises at 27 Seaside Road in the seaside resort of Withernsea [3].

[edit] Present

Now, Seaside FM 105.3 is pro-active in encouraging members of the local area to get involved with the station, either as presenters, broadcast assistants, technicians or managers. Most roles are voluntary-based, and therefore unpaid, but enables anyone to gain a better understanding of how a Radio station operates.

As well as radio broadcasting, they also provided an editing and training services for the community, this was seen as an important part of the regeneration of the area.

Seaside FM have a mobile training facility in the form of a converted camper van that is fully equipped with a dual CD player, 2 record decks, MiniDisk player and mixing desk. There is also Video cameras, still cameras and recording equipment on the van.

After four years building Seaside FM station from scratch and gaining charity status for the Social Enterprise, Lyz Turner stood down as Station Manager in September 2007, after obtaing all licences.

Justin Macartney then took over on 3 September 2007 and arranged the erection of the aerial mast for transmission. September and following a second Ofcom inspection visit, Seaside FM 105.3 launched on 5 October 2007 and is now on air and broadcasting live programmes 7 days a week[4].

[edit] Programming

[edit] Shows

Seaside FM 105.3 has live programmes between at least 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m. every weekday starting with "The Full Fat Breakfast" presented by Paul Ashworth.

The station even broadcasts live (not automated) through the night at weekends.

[edit] Content

All of the programmes broadcast a variety of music and talk topics, generally specialised music shows are aired after 7:00 p.m. and at weekends. This includes contemporary and traditional forms of Pop, Rock, Jazz, Metal, Punk, Dance, Trance, Rock and Roll & Country.

On 5th January 2008, OFCOM received two complaints of Offensive Language on Seaside FM during Joey B's Nightwaves programme [5]. These complaints were not upheld.

[edit] Interviews

Guests from the local community are a large part of the output. People from local organisations in places such as Withernsea, Elstronwick, Patrington, Burstwick and Hedon regularly feature on the airwaves [6].

In addition, they are regularly granted interviews with authors, comedians, artists and musicians/bands. For example, on 28 October 2007, guests on The Mike Brown Radio Show were local band "Infinite" and Frank Sidebottom, who in turn interviewed comedian Trevor Lock on the phone [7]. Mike Brown has also interviewed singer Sandi Thom for his show [8].

[edit] Jingles, promos, PSAs and advertisements

Seaside FM 105.3's on air imaging consists an American female 'station voice' for Station identification purposes. However, most presenters have been allowed to use their own name checks.

Whilst Seaside FM was known as Seaside Radio, some sung idents were produced by Steve England. One of which was a resing of the classic PAMS "smooth sailing" jingle. However, due to the name change these are now no longer used.

Under OFCOM community radio rules, only 50% of Seaside FM 105.3's income can come from advertisements.

[edit] Website

Seaside FM also broadcasts via the internet at www.seasideradio.co.uk which allows people to listen outside of the Holderness broadcast area.

The presenters also regularly write blog's about their programmes on the site and also post pictures of their guests and competition winners [9] [10] [11].
