He was raised in New Castle, Pennsylvania before attending Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania, Boston University and UCLA where he earned a degree in political science.

Kanan received his big break in The Karate Kid, Part III working for Academy Award-winning director John Avildsen. He then starred on the Fox Television series The Outsiders. Later he joined the cast of General Hospital playing A.J. Quartermaine from 1992-1997 and was nominated for outstanding newcomer by the Soap Opera Digest awards. In 1999, he joined the cast of NBC's soap opera Sunset Beach as Jude Cavanaugh and stayed until the end of the year, when the show left the air. Kanan wrote and executive produced Chasing Holden which starred DJ Qualls. He later joined the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful where he captivated audiences with his sinister and sexy portrayal of Deacon Sharpe, appearing from November 2000 until February 2005. Since leaving The Bold and the Beautiful he has starred in several feature films including Carpool Guy directed by Corbin Bernsen.

On August 18, 2007, Kanan was arrested on suspicion of DUI. According to TMZ.com he posted $30,000 bail.
