Seabury

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seabury is a residential area of Malahide, County Dublin, Ireland.

[edit] Location

Seabury is bounded (approximately) by Broadmeadow Estuary to the north, Barrack Bridge to the east and the Malahide-Swords Road to the south. It comprises residential housing (c. 900 homes built in the late 1980s and early 1990s), and a Roman Catholic church, plus a medical centre, small supermarket, fast-food takeaway, and a hair and beauty salon.

Currently under construction at Estuary Road, is a semi-sheltered housing scheme for the elderly comprising 37 dwelling units and a Community Building1. The site was left by a local resident to the Diocesan Trust for the specific purpose of providing homes for the elderly. The Diocesan Trust passed the site on to the Society of St. Vincent De Paul to develop the project in partnership with Fingal County Council. Around one-third of the units will be allocated to Malahide residents.

[edit] Amenities

Seabury has a children's playground, a sailing club and playing pitches for soccer, rugby and GAA sports.

Development of an FAI soccer Mini-Pitch at Seabury Green2 has been approved by Fingal County Council. Measuring approximately 250 square metres (1 tennis court size), this will be an all-weather facility which, according to the council, "will facilitate not only football, but tennis, basketball, volleyball and other suitable sporting activities [and] will be available to the local community free of charge."

Fingal Councillors have also voted unanimously to support the development of an orbital footpath and cycle route around the Broadmeadow estuary3. This will include a boardwalk/bridge across Cave's Marsh which is located on the south shore of Malahide inner estuary where the Gaybrook Stream enters the sea. This area was also the site of a Norse longport (long boat harbour and settlement) between the eighth and twelfth centuries4.

Plans to develop a sports/leisure centre on a dedicated site in the Seabury area (perhaps along the lines of the Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Centre5) have yet to be realised. Development of the site is the responsibility of Estuary Leisure Limited.
