[edit] Summary

Description

Odessa Brown Neighborhood Health Center, formerly Herzl Congregation Synagogue, 172 20th Avenue, Seattle, Washington, USA. Built 1924–1925, sold to the city in 1970 for use as a clinic.

The associated congregation was Orthodox at the time the synagogue was built, but became Seattle's first Conservative congregation in 1929. The transition to a clinic occurred against the background of many Jews leaving central Seattle for Mercer Island, the neighborhood becoming increasingly African American, and the Civil Rights movement and Model Cities program.

For more about the building, see Summary for 172 20th AVE / Parcel ID 9826701245, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.
