Seán Purcell

Seán Purcell (1928August 27, 2005), nicknamed "The Master", was a famous Gaelic footballer for County Galway.

Born in Tuam, County Galway, Purcell is widely regarded as Gaelic football's greatest centre-half forward. He played club football with St Jarlath's of Tuam, winning an All-Ireland Colleges medal. He also played with Tuam Stars winning ten County Senior Football Championship titles with the club. Purcell won an All-Ireland Senior Football medal with Galway in 1956, where his partnership with another player, Frank Stockwell, was described as "the terrible twins."

Purcell won three Railway Cup medals with Connacht, in 1951, 1957 and in 1958, when he was Captain. Purcell's skill as a player was recognised when he was named on the Gaelic Athletic Association's "Team of the Century" in 1984, and the organisations Gaelic football Team of the Millennium in 1999. Shortly before his death Purcell was the recipient of an honorary degree at a ceremony at NUI Galway.

Seán Purcell died at the age of 76 on August 27, 2005.
