[edit] Welcome to Novels WikiProject
Hi, and welcome to the Novels WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to fiction books often referred to as "Novels".
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box is updated quite regularly. You can watch it if you're interested; or, you can add it directly to your user page by including {{WikiProject_Novels_announcements}} there.
While you are updating your userpage, don't forget our userbox {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/Outreach/User WPNOVELS}}. - The project has a monthly newsletter; it will normally be delivered as a link, but other methods are available.
There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:
- Starting some new articles? Our article structure guidelines / template outlines some things to include.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask one of the members, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 07:39, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
- And I'll add a more specific welcome to the Short Story Task Force from a relatively new member as well! -Midnightdreary 02:49, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Encantadas
Hey Scrawlspacer, good to hear from you, and I'm glad we've got someone who knows what they're talking about on board. The style I use here is from Wikipedia:Citing sources/example style. I believe it's based on the APA style. As far as I know, no particular style is favored over another, but it's generally best not to replace one style with another if someone has already formatted it according to one. That is, as long as the style is consistent within the article; if not, then just go ahead and pick one to make it consistent.
I can understand your frustration in getting reverted, especially if people are being unfriendly about it. When I was a newbie I had some experiences that nearly put me off of the project. A good solution may be bringing up your intentions on the talk page before making major edits, so that others can see what it is you want to do. I'm available to lend a hand if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask.--Cúchullain t/c 05:22, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] The epic whale
Hi, I keep track of references to the Epic disambiguation page, so you might want to review where you want Epic to link to. Since you are in the middle of editing, I'll leave it to you. Normally, I would either pipe the link to Epic poetry or unlink it (implying the dictionary meaning), depending on how well the article applies. I'll check back in a few days and make a change if I see you haven't. I don't think linking to the dab page makes sense. . . (John User:Jwy talk) 23:52, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Herman Melville
You're doing some great work on the Herman Melville article, so keep it up! Might I suggest an author navigation box to cut out the lengthy bibliography section? Take a look at Template:Edgar Allan Poe and Template:Charles Dickens for some examples. Let me know if you need help. -Midnightdreary 21:40, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, I thought I'd give it a try myself. Let me know what you think: Template:Herman Melville. We can add it the bottom of all the articles for his books, stories, etc. as well as to Melville's main article. That'll allow us to take out the huge bibliography chunk. The template loses a little information (such as links to full text) but that would be rectified once we get articles on each of these works... I think that's the ultimate idea with these nav-boxes. Okay, let me know what you think!! -Midnightdreary 20:13, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sale, Greater Manchester FAC
Hi. I'm sorry to bother you, but as a LoCE member, I just wondered if you would be willing to have a look through the Sale, Greater Manchester article. It is currently a Featured Article Candidate and needs a copy-edit for grammar by someone who hasn't yet seen it. Any other ways to improve the article would also be welcome. Thank you very much, if you can. Epbr123 15:59, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- Your copy-edit of Sale has been excellent; its language seems so much better now. I hope you get to copy-edit it further at some time. Many thanks. Epbr123 21:57, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not totally sure what you mean by "inappropriate shorthand", but there are these pages: Wikipedia:Explain jargon, Wikipedia:Technical terms and definitions, Wikipedia:Manual of Style (abbreviations). Epbr123 23:29, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
Whilst I agree that the History section is patchy, I'm afraid that I don't think the edits you made improved it. You sugest adding more information, but you have remoced important information such as the the origin of the name of Sale, and the finds of Roman coins and a neolithic arrow head; toponomy is a required element of WP:UKCITIES and surely the ancient finds are notable. I think that some of the 'choppyness' results from an attempt to include too much unimportant information, some text does need to be pruned from the section - for instance that Sale Old Hall's dovecote survives is worth noting, but it's use isn't especially, and perhaps the material on who owned Sale, such as the de Sales and de Carringtons.
The dead reference occured between your edits (see here). Also I'm concerned that your rephrasal of some sentences may be slightly misleading, ie:"solely a farming community", there is no such thing, there is always some form of trade. As such I would like your permission to revert you edits to the history section and I'll have a go at addressing the issues. Nev1 13:59, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- I've only had a quick look, but I was happy to see the missing stuff reinstated. Everyone has their blind spots. I've not given it a close read but someone else has. Nev1 09:25, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] League of Copyeditors
I'm very sorry I haven't had a chance to welcome you earlier, I have been incredibly busy lately. We are glad to have your help. Currently, we have really cut down the backlog of articles in need of copyedit. Therefore, a major goal at this moment is to identify new articles that are in need of work. When you run across them, be sure to tag them for copyediting.
If you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to drop me a line. Trusilver 21:51, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] The TV Set: Category-problem
To categorize alphabetically, 2 possibilities:
- 1. [Category:TV Set, The]---------and ONLY THAT category will be listed like that.
- 2. {DEFAULTSORT:TV Set, The}------and ALL categories will be listed like that.

[edit] Epic Language
In his book Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity, Richard Rorty analyzed the psychology of the "Ironist". The "Ironist" is somebody who is impressed by the use of ironic language. MY QUESTION: Are there books written about the use of epic language (= the language/vocabulary of myths, great narratives, the Bible, Dante, ...) ?? You can write to stefanomione@yahoo.fr Stefanomione 11:18, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] About your comment on my open letter
Thanks for your exhaustive, thought provoking and well balanced comment.
Your text appears somewhat lengthy, but it is dense and very well structured. People tend to browse long comments too superficially, and your comment deserves more attention. I added paragraph titles to make it more appealing, and to more easily refer to specific parts of your comment in my answer. If you don't like the titles, please just edit or remove them or ask me to remove them and I will do it.
In your text, I substituted "strikethrough option" with "strikethrough formatting option" (notice that I included an internal link), because I think that not everybody knows the meaning of the word "strikethrough" (I didn't).
My answer is published on my user talk page. Paolo.dL 11:43, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
I answered to your latest comment. Please tell me whether my hypothesis is correct or not, and consider my final request. Paolo.dL 11:33, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
I will soon archive your latest comment and my answer in a separate sub-page of my talk page. If you want me to wait for your reply, please warn me. Paolo.dL 10:08, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
Since you didn't answer to my request posted above and dated 13 July 2007, and you wrote "I hope your dealings with you in the future will be minimal", I consider our discussion closed. Therefore, I am archiving the second part of it, which is quite interesting for me, but in my opinion not relevant in the context of my open letter. If you change your mind, feel free to continue our discussion in this page. I will insert the archive in my watchlist and I will anwer. Thank you again for your first comment, which remains one of the most interesting parts of my open letter. With regards, Paolo.dL 10:19, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] League of Copyeditors roll call
![]() |
Greetings from the League of Copyeditors. Your name is listed on our members page, but we are unsure how many of the people listed there are still active contributors to the League's activities. If you are still interested in participating in the work of the League, please follow the instructions at the members page to add your name to the active members list. Once you have done that, you might want to familiarise yourself with the new requests system, which has replaced the old /proofreading subpage. As the old system is now deprecated, the main efforts of the League should be to clear the substantial backlog which still exists there. The League's services are in as high demand as ever, as evinced by the increasing backlog on our requests pages, both old and new. While FA and GA reviewers regularly praise the League's contributions to reviewed articles, we remain perennially understaffed. Fulfilling requests to polish the prose of Wikipedia's highest-profile articles is a way that editors can make a very noticeable difference to the appearance of the encyclopedia. On behalf of the League, if you do consider yourself to have left, I hope you will consider rejoining; if you consider yourself inactive, I hope you will consider returning to respond to just one request per week, or as many as you can manage. Merry Christmas and happy editing, The League of Copyeditors. |

[edit] 19th-century novels task force
Hi, Scrawlspacer. I'm starting up a 19th-century novels task force for WP:NOVELS. This would cover the works of many well-known authors, including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Victor Hugo and Leo Tolstoy. If you think you'd be interested in supporting or participating in the task force, please let me know. Cheers. – Liveste [talk • contrib] 10:40, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
