Screech owl

The term screech owl can mean[1]:

  • The barn owl, the primary British meaning of the term (from its discordant cry which is supposed to be an evil omen)
  • Any of various small American owls of the genus Otus, allied to the Scops owls – especially the Eastern Screech Owl or Western Screech Owl of North America
  • A bearer of evil tidings, a person who presages misfortune, a familiar of witches and warlocks
  • A series of novels taking place in Canada. Also the name of the hockey team in that series.
