[edit] Route description

[edit] History

  • Intended to be built on a "fast track"[1]
  • Originally planned to have an 18-foot (5.5 m) median with Jersey barrier, which would meet minimum AASHTO requirements of 10 feet (3.0 m)[2]
  • Tulsa mayor's committee submitted report to OTA April 13, 1989 requesting 47 changes to the turnpike
    • Wider overpasses to accommodate future expansion of surface streets
      • Delaware Avenue
    • Route move north 100 feet (0.030 km) between Yale Avenue and Sheridan Road to accommodate a greenway along the turnpike
    • Toll plaza moved farther east to minimize impact on surrounding area
    • Compliance with local flood prevention ordinances
    • Pedestrian sidewalks and tunnels, including pedestrian bridges on both sides of the Arkansas River and near Hunter Park[3]
  • OTA responded that some of the more minor changes could be made, but many of the changes could not be made for cost reasons[4]
  • Mayor Roger Randle wanted a written agreement between the city and OTA before ground was broken[4]

[edit] Environmental concerns

  • Tulsans Against Turnpikes announced that if EPA, USDOT and DOD did not force OTA to conduct an EIS be done within 60 days they would sue the three federal agencies[5]

[edit] Tolls

  • A two-axle vehicle currently pays $2.45 ($2.30 with Pikepass) to drive the whole length of the turnpike.

[edit] Services

Law enforcement along the Creek Turnpike is provided by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troop XE, a special troop assigned to the turnpike.[6]
