Scotton is a small village and civil parish (population 283 in the 2001 census), located four miles north of Harrogate, and less than two miles from Knaresborough. It is notable as the boyhood home of Guy Fawkes whose residence still stands on the edge of the village. Due to the villages connection with Fawkes, at the annual bonfire night celebration, although there is a bonfire and fireworks, there is no guy burned on the fire. The village has an annual summer fete called the Scotton Feast. Although this was not held in 2005 for the first time in several years, (according to the organising committee, due to lack of support from within the village) it returned in 2006.

Apart from the Guy Fawkes Arms public house, the village has little in the way of public amenities. It does have a village hall, and a cricket team, but no shop, as the post office closed down rather than become a national lottery outlet.

It is used as somewhat of a rat run, by people wishing to travel from the A6055 to the B6165 and vice versa.
