Scooterworks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Scooterworks USA is a Chicago-based mail order and brick-and-mortar retail sales company. Its main mission is as a supplier of parts and accessories for motorscooters, including Vespa scooters. It is also the sister company of Genuine Scooters, the maker of the Stella (scooter).

History
Scooterworks was started in 1990 by Philip McCaleb, a Chicago native who had spent many years living in Europe and riding Vespa scooters. Piaggio, the manufacturer of the Vespa, had left the US market in 1985, and Philip found that there were no companies serious about supplying parts and supporting the scooters in the US. Scooterworks started by buying and selling vintage Vespa scooters locally, doing repair work, and eventually publishing a black and white catalog. The mail order business proved to be very popular, and has continued to be the mainstay of the operation. Scooterworks quickly grew to be the largest scooter-based business in North America.

Focus
Scooterworks's business can be broken down into three main categories:

  • Worldwide mail-order company
  • Local scooter dealership
  • Local scooter service facility

The local dealership sells Kymco, SYM, and Genuine Scooters brands of motorscooters. The service facility does repairs on most makes of vintage and modern scooters. The mail order business sells parts and accessories for vintage and modern Vespa scooters, as well as accessories and performance items for many other brands of modern scooters such as Yamaha, Honda, Kymco, Malaguti, Aprilia, TN'G, and Genuine Scooters.

Mailings
Scooterworks publishes full catalogs on a bi-annual basis, and sales flyers quarterly.
