Scinote was tested in WT:SAND against {{X1}}, where {{X1}} was as below.

Scinote's post-expand include size was significantly lower, neither template used expensive parser functions (as of 9 Apr 08, #ifexist
and {{PAGESINCATEGORY}}
), on other counts X1 did slightly better. Scinote's range was greater than that of X1 but this was simply due to the current limits of {{10^}} (an easy fix if ever needed). JЇ

These are the subtemplates of Template:Scinote (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs) (doc).
These find the order of magnitude (to the thousand) and multiply by the appropriate power of one thousand.
The purpose of this is to return 0 when 0 is entered.
