Scientific Technology Options Assessment

Scientific Technology Options Assessment (STOA) is the branch of the European Union government responsible for technology assessment. STOA works in conjunction with organizations within both the private and public sectors – including laboratories, universities and research institutes – to provide expert assessment of technology related matters to the members of the European Parliament and European Commission.

STOA is governed by a bureau of several MEPs. The STOA Bureau is run by a three-member Panel, comprised of the Vice-President of the European Parliament, along with an elected Chairman and Vice-Chairman. Currently, the Chairman is Philippe Busquin of Belgium and the Vice-Chairman is Malcolm Harbour of Great Britain.
