The Church of Scientology is the largest religious organization devoted to the practice and the promotion of the Scientology belief system. The first Scientology church was established in December 1953 in New Jersey by American author L. Ron Hubbard, his wife Mary Sue Hubbard, John Galusha and a few others early Dianeticists, although the Hubbard Association of Scientologists International (HASI) had been operating already since 1952 and Hubbard had been selling Scientology books and technology.

An E-meter is an electronic device manufactured by the Church of Scientology at their Gold Base production facility. It is used as an aid by Dianetics and Scientology counselors and counselors-in-training in some forms of auditing, the application of the techniques of Dianetics and Scientology to another or to oneself for the express purpose of addressing spiritual issues. The device is formally known as the Hubbard Electrometer.

The worldwide "spiritual headquarters" of the Church of Scientology is located in the city of Clearwater, Florida. Officially known in Scientology as Flag Land Base, this international headquarters was founded in the late 1970s when an anonymous Scientology-founded group called "United Churches of Florida" purchased the Fort Harrison Hotel for $3 million.

Scientology and psychiatry have come into conflict with each other since the foundation of Scientology in 1952. Scientology is publicly, and often vehemently, opposed to both psychiatry and psychology. It offers itself as an alternative to psychiatry, which Scientologists believe to be a barbaric and corrupt profession.

Super Power Building in Clearwater, Florida

The Super Power Building is an edifice in Clearwater, Florida that will be the Church of Scientology's largest property in the city when completed. The huge high-rise complex, which occupies an entire block at 215 S Fort Harrison Ave, will be topped by a 15-story tower surmounted with a bronze Scientology cross that will be visible over a wide area of Clearwater. The building has been under construction since 1998 but has yet to be finished.

The M/V Freewinds.

The M/V Freewinds is a cruise ship operated by the Church of Scientology. Its home port is Curaçao, and it frequents the Netherlands Antilles and the Caribbean. The vessel was built in 1968 by Wärtsilä in Turku, Finland, at the former Crichton-Vulcan shipyard to Ice Class 1A, as one of a series of four RORO car ferries. It was purchased by Majestic Cruise Lines, a Church of Scientology corporation, in 1986 and subsequently was renamed the Freewinds in its home port of Curaçao.

Operation Snow White was the Church of Scientology's name for a project during the 1970s to purge unfavorable records about Scientology and its founder L. Ron Hubbard. This project included a series of infiltrations and thefts from 136 government agencies, foreign embassies and consulates, as well as private organizations critical of Scientology, carried out by Church members; the single largest infiltration of the United States government in history with up to 5,000 covert agents.

A Church of Scientology building in Hamburg, Germany. Different countries have taken markedly different approaches to Scientology. The Hamburg government set up the Scientology Task Force of the Hamburg Interior Authority in 1992 to monitor the activities and publications of Scientology, raise public awareness about the organization, and serve as a resource to Scientology members who may wish to exit the group.

Bridge Publications, Inc. (BPI) is based in Los Angeles, California, and is the Church of Scientology's North American publishing corporation. It publishes the Scientology and nonfiction works of L. Ron Hubbard. Outside of North America, this is done under the New Era Publications name, based in Copenhagen. It also published Hubbard's fiction and the annual Writers of the Future science fiction anthologies until 2002, when Galaxy Press was established for this purpose.

L. Ron Hubbard, creator of Dianetics and founder of Scientology, served in at least two branches of the United States Armed Forces. As with many aspects of Hubbard's life, Hubbard and his supporters would later claim his service to be more extensive and positive than the records would support. Later, his interest in the military would be reflected by his formation of the paramilitary Sea Org and his nickname of "the Commodore".
