The Critical Art Ensemble makes the argument that acts of plagiarism need to be re-evaluated in techno-culture, and this in light of the history of recombinant textual reproduction. They argue that the power of "recombination" outweighes the stigma that comes with the notion of "plagiarism," but one might object that the CAE too closely alligns the definition of plagiarism with acts of appropriation in art. Thus, they do not defend plagiarism so much as draw favorable comparisons between artistic appropriation and cultural practices in general.
