[edit] Introduction
Personal Writing is a subcategory of the Kentucky Writing Portfolio that encompasses a piece of student writing from the area of personal narrative, memoir, or personal essay. Personal writing focuses on the individual experiences of the student writer. Students’ personal writing is expected to fully develop their personal experience while using sensory detail, expression of thoughts and feelings, incorporation of dialogue, and the use of a first person perspective. 2 The purpose of the writer is to share a particular experience, person, or information about one's life that allows the reader to better understand the personality and characteristics of the writer which make them who they are.
[edit] Assessment/Scoring
Personal Writing will be evaluated with the same criteria has several other required Kentucky Writing Portfolio Pieces. The various categories assessed are: 2
-

- Idea Development (relevant, related, appropriate)
- Organization (engages audience, meaningful order, effective use of transitions)
- Sentences (complete, varied structure and length)
- Language (word choice, sensory language, detail)
- Correctedness (spelling, punctuation, capitalization)
Students are expected to develop strenth in these areas during their high school English Language Arts classrooms. Each area is taken into consideration within the overall scoring. [edit] Personal Narrative
Personal Narrative is a literary piece focusing on a particular event in the writer’s life. Written in first person, the author uses diction and sensory details in order to express emotions that place the reader into the personal experience. 4 Common ideas for personal narrative include stories from one's childhood that include a life-changing event, death of a family member, vacation, new experience, etc.
[edit] Memoir
Memoir is a piece of autobiographical writing that is shorter in length and doesn’t encompass every fact or detail of the writer’s life. Instead, the memoir focuses on a specific event, person, place, or object that shares an emotional significance and is meaningful to the writer’s childhood or present life. The memoir focuses on narrative events; however, the writing is much more emotional and connects the writer to someone or something that had an impact on their life. 4
[edit] Personal Essay
Personal Essay is a type of writing that will more than likely be used by an applicant or to explain who the writer is personally to those who do not know them. It is best to start with an angle that is different to pull readers into the essay. The writer should explain skills, personal characteristics, interests, etc. that will enable the reader or reviewing committee of the personal essay to better know the writer’s personal qualities in order to evaluate whether one is an acceptable candidate. 1
