[edit] Purpose
In Wikipedia, creating an internal link is easy: Simply put [[double brackets]] around the word to create the link of that name/title. For example, if you wish to create a link to the topic Mercury, you should type it as [[Mercury]]. The link to Mercury will be created once you save your edit.
However, when the same title might refer to more than one article, a link to that title can result in conflicts or confusion. In the above example, a question arises: is the intent to link to Mercury the:
- element, the
- planet, the
- automobile brand, the
- record label, the
- NASA manned-spaceflight project, the
- plant, or, last but not least, the
- Roman god?
(Note: to see how the above links were created, see the article on piped links.)
Disambiguation is Wikipedia's method for distinguishing among many different articles that share the same term in their respective titles. This guideline describes several different methods of disambiguation.
