[edit] History
ESTC was created in 1983 in the structure of the National Conservatory of Theatre - founded about 150 years before by Almeida Garrett - later integrated, in 1985, in the Polytechnical Institute of Lisbon. Since 1998, ESTC has been functioning in its new installations, in the Central Park of the city of Amadora, which are equipped with classrooms, theatrical spaces, sound stage, laboratories, offices and a library. The School's Great Auditory, a huge room prepared to present spectacles of Theatre, Cinema, Music and Dance and for the realization of congresses has the capacity for 336 spectators. It is there or in the theatre studio, the last one with the capacity for 70 spectators, that the students of theatre publicly present their exercises, auditions, shows and presentations. On the other hand, the films produced and directed by the cinema students can be watched in the viewing room, equipped with technical equipment for the projection of films with capacity for 78 spectators.
ESTC is part of the IIT – UNESCO Chair, of ELIA – European League of Institutes of the Arts and of CILECT – Centre National de Liaison des Écoles de Cinéma et de Télévision (International Association of Film and Television Schools).
Nowadays is being negotiated the integration of ESTC in the Lisbon University by means of the fusion between the Polytechnical Institute of Lisbon and the University of Lisbon.
