Schoenchen is a city in Ellis County, Kansas, United States. The population was 214 at the 2000 census. Schoenchen is one of several small towns in the area that was established by Volga German immigrants to Kansas. Schoenchen is primarily populated by descendants of the original German-speaking immigrants, and many local residents still speak English with a German accent.[citation needed]

Schoenchen is located at 38°42′48″N, 99°19′51″W (38.713244, -99.330760)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 214 people, 78 households, and 60 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,936.1 people per square mile (751.1/km²). There were 86 housing units at an average density of 778.1/sq mi (301.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.79% White, 2.34% Native American, 1.87% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.40% of the population.

There were 78 households out of which 46.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.8% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 111.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $38,125, and the median income for a family was $42,321. Males had a median income of $30,089 versus $20,469 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,768. About 1.7% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under the age of eighteen and 7.1% of those sixty five or over.
