Schierke is a town in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt in Germany, formerly just inside the GDR border. It is a good place to start or finish a walk to the Brocken via the Goetheweg or the Glassmaker's Way. It has both a bus service and an HSB narrow gauge station located about 100 metres higher up the Brocken than the village. It is also the location of the famous granite tor, (30 metres from the railway station), which has a herb liqueur named after it: the Schierker Feuerstein.
The town is generally regarded as a resort town and provides the region with a popular resort for skiing destinations such as Wurmberg. A popular attaction in the area is the Brocken Coaster, a local roller coaster ride. A popular winter activity in the area involves hiring or obtaining a sled and riding it down the "bob bahn" - a local tobogganing track.
[edit] Schierker Feuerstein
Schierker Feuerstein is a traditional liqueur (35% alcohol) brewed in Schierke. It is named after the Feuersteinklippen, a rock formation nearby.
