Maximum Ride: School's Out Forever is the second book in the sci-fi action-adventure series Maximum Ride by James Patterson, published by Little, Brown. The series is set in the near future, and centers around the 'Flock', a group of human-avian hybrids on the run from the scientists who created them. There are currently four books in the series: The Angel Experiment (2005) which was a New York Times Bestseller for 12 weeks, School's Out Forever (2006), Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports, and The Final Warning (2008). [1].
The series is similar to When the Wind Blows and The Lake House, which are also by James Patterson.
[edit] Plot
In this book, Ari, Jeb's son-turned-Eraser (a half-wolf, half-human 7-year-old kid) returns to life after Max accidentally broke his neck outside the Institute in New York (See The Angel Experiment). After Fang gets injured in a fight with Ari, the Flock take him to a hospital where the FBI gets news of them. When the Flock finds out that Fang requires a blood transfusion, Max donates some of her blood. When Fang recovers, Anne Walker, one of the FBI agents offers the Flock a home with her if they will let her examine them in non-painful and non-invasive ways. They agree although Max is somewhat reluctant. Anne enrolls the kids in a normal school without considering what they wish. However, they consent to go, somewhat doubtfully. Max begins to feel jealous of Anne, feeling that she is being replaced. The flock goes to school and make a few friends. Fang also has a romantic fling with a girl named Lissa, who Max loathes after finding the two making out in an empty classroom. A short while after, Max goes on a date with her classmate, Sam. During the date, Ari shows up for a brief moment and gives her a "predator grin". After Sam's older sister drives Max home, Max and Sam make out on Anne's front porch.
But soon after, the Flock discovers that the school is actually run by the 'whitecoats' who had experimented upon them when they were little until they ran away. The group flies back to Anne's just to pick up Total, but Max decides to intercept what seems to be an argument between Anne, Jeb and Ari. It turns out Anne is actually The Director. Max flies away and Erasers start flying after them. The flock splits up through the woods. Max catches Ari alone and surprises him ,expecting him to attack her. But he sits back on a tree branch and says he wants to chat. Then Ari asks Max to disappear with him, drop off the map and be safe from Jeb and the whitecoats. Max turns the offer down, saying she could never leave the flock. Then Ari launches at her, but she gets away. Ari follows her, but Fang attacks Ari, trying to get revenge for the fight they had on the beach in the first book.
