List of Lost episodes

"The Man Behind the Curtain" is the twentieth episode of the third season of Lost, and overall the 67th episode of the series. It was first aired on May 9, 2007. The episode was written by Elizabeth Sarnoff and Drew Goddard, and directed by Bobby Roth. The title of the episode is a reference to the L. Frank Baum's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) refers to when deriding Ben Linus (Michael Emerson) by saying that he "is the man behind the curtain, the Wizard of Oz".

The episode's plot, including flashbacks, focus primarily on the character Ben Linus, the apparent leader of the Others. The episode's contemporary plot takes place on December 21, 2004, Ben's birthday and 91 days after the crash of Oceanic Flight 815, and follows Ben take Locke to see Jacob, a native inhabitant of the Island and the true leader of the Others. Flashbacks concentrate on Ben's youth on the Island, and his betrayal of the DHARMA Initiative to the original inhabitants of the Island.

Plot summary

The episode takes place after the previous episode "The Brig", and also continues part of the story from the episode before, "D.O.C.". John Locke returns to the temporary encampment of the Others, carrying his father's corpse. Ben Linus agrees to uphold his deal with Locke and invites him to see the true leader of the Others, Jacob. However, Mikhail Bakunin (Andrew Divoff) arrives and warns Ben that a parachutist landed on the Island, and questions why Locke is with them and is going to visit Jacob, but is beaten by Locke when he tries to divert Ben's attention.

During the night, Ben and Locke arrive at a shack in the jungle, surrounded by a ring of volcanic ash. Both enter and Ben begins an animated conversation with an invisible figure, leading Locke to assume that Jacob is a hoax. As he is leaving, Jacob (voiced by Carlton Cuse) says "help me". Locke points his flashlight at Jacob, which angers him, and Jacob begins to wreak havoc in the cabin, while momentarily becoming visible.

Alongside the main plot, James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway) returns to the beach with a tape recording that Locke gave to him, which exposes Juliet Burke (Elizabeth Mitchell) as a mole. At night, the survivors discuss both the parachute landing of Naomi (Marsha Thomason) and the impending attack by the Others. Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) begins to formulate a plan which will ensure both the rescue of the survivors, and a halt to the attack.

Flashbacks focus on Ben's youth. The first flashback shows Ben's mother, Emily (Carrie Preston) dying in childbirth, with father Roger Linus (Jon Gries) helped by Horace and Olivia Goodspeed (Doug Hutchison and Samantha Mathis). The Goodspeeds later recruit Roger and Ben into the DHARMA Initiative. The next flashbacks takes place during Ben's childhood. While Ben is in school, the Initiative's residence, the Barracks, is attacked by a group called the "Hostiles". Fearing his alcoholic father and seeing visions of his dead mother, Ben runs into the jungle and encounters a man called Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell), who allows him to defect to his cause in return for patience. In the final flashback, set during Ben's adulthood on his Birthday, Ben kills his father during the "Purge", a genocidal gas attack against the Initiative.

At the end of the episode, Ben returns to his camp with Locke via a different route, and shows Locke the mass grave of the DHARMA Initiative. Ben shoots Locke in his hip, who falls into the grave, and angrily demands to know what Jacob said to him. When Locke relays Jacob's message, Ben replies "Well, I certainly hope he helps you, John", and leaves Locke for dead.
