[edit] Subspecies

There are four recognized subspecies of S. serrifer, but the subspecies are known to intergrade in areas where their geographic ranges overlap, so differentiating them can be difficult:

  • Blue Spiny Lizard, Sceloporus serrifer cyanogenys (Cope, 1885)
  • West Gulf Spiny Lizard, Sceloporus serrifer plioporus (Smith, 1939)
  • Sceloporus serrifer prezygus (Smith, 1942)
  • Yucatán Spiny Lizard, Sceloporus serrifer serrifer (Cope, 1866)
