The ScatterTones are UCLA's second mixed contemporary a cappella group, and one of five non-affiliated a cappella groups on UCLA's campus. Founded in 2002 by Mark Chen and Sophia Dai, The ScatterTones are entirely student-run, like most collegiate a cappella groups. Members pick their own repertoire, and arrange everything on their own. The group tends to focus on recent radio hits, but will venture into other categories such as oldies, jazz, and popular songs from movies. New members are selected by a competitive audition each year.

The ScatterTones perform on-campus at UCLA frequently, and do frequent performances throughout Southern California. They have been favorites at the annual freshman convocation and UCLA's oldest musical tradition, Spring Sing. In 2006 and 2007, they won the Spring Sing Gold Shield Alumnae Esprit de Corps Award for Best Overall Participation. In 2008, the ScatterTones won the UCLA Prytanean Alumnae Award for Best A Cappella Entry at Spring Sing for their rendition of Mariah Carey's "Always Be My Baby."

The group has competed in the International Championship of College A Cappella (ICCA), and advanced to the West Seminfinals in 2007 and 2008. The ScatterTones entertained the crowds at Barack Obama's Los Angeles Presidential campaign kick-off. In 2005, they had the honor of opening for m-pact after m-pact's relocation to Los Angeles.

They released "Ripples," an EP, in 2005 as a teaser for their upcoming album. Completed in 2006 and released on June 10, "ToasterScent" is their debut album, spanning three years of musical accomplishment. One June 5, 2008, the group released their second album, "Blink."
