Scat "Scatophagus argus", are becoming very popular these in between aquarist. These fish are very beautiful and its body structure resembles much popular discus fish. The scats are hardier and easy to keep and they look very beautiful with black spots on their body. This species is generally distributed around Indo-Pacific, Some part of Japan, New Guinea to Southeastern Australia and other part of the world.
Unlike many aquarium fish which needs fresh water, scat needs brackish water. As a baby they live in fresh water environment but when grows older they tend to live in brackish or salt water environment. Since they come from warmer place they require little warm water(21C to 28C).
As a young they may not require big aquarium but they can grow big, so big aquarium with salty water is much preferred for this fish. This species is fairly peaceful if enough space is given. But some time they tend to harass other spices.
This spice is omnivorous so eat every thing, including vegetables, live, frozen, flakes etc. They also tend to eat aquarium plants. And due to there eating habit they are little messy fish.
The some of the spices of scats are The Green or Spotted Scat, The Silver Scat, The Red or Ruby Scat, The Striped or African Scat and so on.
