The scalloped ribbonfish, Zu cristatus, is a ribbonfish of the family Trachipteridae found circumglobally in all oceans, at depths down to 90 m. Its length is up to 118 cm.
The scalloped ribbonfish is oceanic and mesopelagic, adults feeding on small fishes and squids. They are oviparous, with planktonic eggs and larvae. They swim with a head-up stance.
Coloration of the young is silvery with around 6 vertical bars on the dorsal part of body and 4 on the ventral part, tail with around 6 complete black bars, and the caudal fin blackish with the base of the fin pale. Adults are silver-grey but paler ventrally, the dorsal fin is scarlet, and the caudal fin is reddish-black, darker distally.
