[edit] Origin and recording
The song was the one of two songs, the other being "Reach Down", to be written before Chris Cornell approached the remaining Mother Love Bone members to record the songs.[1] The recordings were originally planned to be released merely as a single before Temple of the Dog formed and decided to write more music.
[edit] Release and reception
The song peaked at number five on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Clear Channel included the song on its list of possibly inappropriate songs.
[edit] Lyrical meaning
Lead singer Chris Cornell wrote the song as a tribute to his roommate, Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood, who had recently died of a heroin overdose.
[edit] Live performances
The song was first performed live in Seattle at the Off Ramp Café on November 13, 1990.[2] Chris Cornell added "Say Hello 2 Heaven" to his solo live set in 2007.
