say (software)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

say is a Mac OS X command line program to convert text to audioable sound or an AIFF file.

[edit] Usage

$ say [-v voiceName] [-o outputAIFF] -f fileName
$ say [-v voiceName] [-o outputAIFF] text

[edit] Examples

$ say I am a Mac. # says "I am a Mac" through the speakers in the default voice
$ say -v Vicki I am a Mac. # says "I am a Mac" through the speakers in the voice Vicki
$ say -o myText.aiff I am a Mac. # makes an .aiff file containing the text "I am a Mac."

A common use of say is:

$ say -f myBook.txt -o myText.aiff

This turns a text file into a makeshift audiobook.
